Denton ISD Fine Arts

Empowering Artistic Growth. Every Student. Every Day.

Band, Choir, and Orchestra students from all over the state of Texas are auditioning for TMEA All-State using the new format of submitting recorded auditions online and navigating the challenges of taking private lessons virtually rather than in person. Students in high school band and choir are in the midst of the Region-level rounds of auditions. Students in high school orchestras and jazz ensembles have now completed their Region and Area rounds of auditions and the rosters have recently been named for the TMEA All-State Jazz Ensemble and All-State Orchestra. We are proud to announce there are two Denton ISD students returning to the TMEA All-State Jazz Ensemble and All-State Orchestra.

Matthew Garcia, Denton HS senior, has been named 2nd tenor saxophone in the TMEA All-State Jazz Ensemble 2. This is Matthew's second time to make the All-State Jazz Ensemble. Matthew is a student of Jesse Woolery, Denton HS Lab Band Director, and Emilio Mesa, Denton ISD Saxophone Private Lesson Teacher.

Christian Luevano, Guyer HS junior, has been named 6th chair string bass in the TMEA All-State Symphony Orchestra. This is Christian's third time to make the All-State Orchestra. Christian is a student of Michelle Hanlon and Jeremy Atkins, Guyer HS Orchestra Directors, and Jeff Bradetich, UNT Regents Professor of Double Bass.

Congratulations to these outstanding students and their teachers for this tremendous honor. We are very proud of this accomplishment and all of the hard work and practice it took to prepare for the auditions. Best wishes to the band and choir students that are auditioning in the coming weeks.

Big picture

Middle school band students from Denton ISD participated in the TMEA Region 2 Band auditions. This year, TMEA is requiring the students to submit audition recordings online instead of performing in person to mitigate the spread of COVID. All of the Region 2 audition recordings were judged November 7-8. Students that were selected to the Region 2 Band have the honor of being named as a member of the band. However, there is not a live clinic or performance scheduled for the band at this time due to the COVID pandemic.

27 Denton ISD middle school band students were selected to the TMEA Region 2 Band and three were named as alternates. Congratulations to these outstanding students. And many thanks to their directors, private lesson teachers, and parents for supporting them and helping them prepare for the audition.

Music Programs Perform Virtual and Outdoor Concerts

To mitigate the spread of COVID-19 our music directors have creatively planned online virtual concerts and outdoor concerts so that students can perform the works they have been learning. Many thanks to our hard working directors who have made these concerts possible for the student performers and audiences to experience. Here is a video sampling of those performances:

Victor Lozada Article Published in The Orff Echo

Victor Lozada, Elementary Music Specialist at Pecan Creek Elementary, contributed an article in The Orff Echo, the national, peer-reviewed quarterly journal and philosophical voice of the American Orff-Schulwerk Association. The journal's mission is to demonstrate the value of Orff Schulwerk and promote its widespread use; to support the professional development of its members; and to inspire and advocate for the creative potential of all learners.

Mr. Lozada's article is entitled, "Music to Make a Positive Difference". We are very thankful for the positive difference Mr. Lozada and all our elementary music specialists make in the lives of students. Congratulations to Mr. Lozada for having this article selected and published in the national Orff journal.

Big picture
Denton ISD Superintendent, Dr. Jamie Wilson, was named one of five public school administrators from across Texas selected as state finalists for the annual Superintendent of the Year (SOTY) award. Sponsored by the Texas Association of School Boards (TASB), the SOTY program has recognized exemplary superintendents for excellence and achievement in educational leadership since 1984. Candidates are chosen for their strong leadership skills, dedication to improving educational quality, ability to build effective employee relations, student performance, and commitment to public involvement in education. Superintendents from any of the state’s local school districts are eligible for nomination by their school boards. Local nominees are submitted to a regional selection committee, which chooses one nominee to send to the state selection committee.

We are very proud to have Dr. Wilson leading the way in Denton ISD and we congratulate him for being honored as a finalist. Watch the video below to see him painting in the art classroom with students at Cross Oaks Elementary School.

HS Marching Band Evaluations at C.H. Collins Stadium

On November 7, Denton ISD's four high school marching bands performed their field shows to be evaluated by three judges according to the UIL marching band performance rubrics. The students and directors received valuable feedback from the judges regarding their music and visual execution. The bands also had a video production crew on hand filming their shows and additional footage to create promotional videos. Superintendent, Dr. Jamie Wilson, also attended and encouraged and thanked the 2020 drum majors for their leadership. We are extremely proud of the dedication and hard work of our marching band students and directors in putting together field shows while navigating all of the challenges of learning during the pandemic and mitigating the spread of COVID-19.
