Thoughts for Summer - By Jaime Grasmick
Thoughts for the Summer
As summer draws near, homeschooling parents approach such a season with one of a few reactions…
1- “Yes! We’re done with school, let’s enjoy our freedom!”
2- “Don’t even think you’re done with ‘school’, all of life brings with it an opportunity to learn- school continues!”
3- “Routine is gone and now I have crazy kids on my hands… we need school!!!”
With which do you identify? Whichever it may be, I think we can all be encouraged and perhaps challenged to embrace summer! Not only do we need to embrace summer, we need to embrace this journey we are on as parents; and homeschooling parents at that. So take this time of summer to refresh, renew, and revive. Set your heart on goals for the new school year, and goals as a parent- for you, for your child, for your family.
It is my hope that this “Wholehearted Parenting Manifesto” can encourage your heart as we begin our summer journey. Might it stir you, motivate you, and inspire you to be present with your children and see them deeply!
The Wholehearted Parenting Manifesto
From Daring Greatly by Brene Brown
Above all else, I want you to know that you are loved and lovable. You will learn this from my words and actions- the lessons on love are in how I treat you and how I treat myself.
I want you to engage with the world from a place of worthiness. You will learn you that you are worthy of love, belonging, and joy every time you see me practice self-compassion and embrace my own imperfections.
We will practice courage in our family by showing up, letting ourselves be seen, and honoring vulnerability. We will share our stories of struggle and strength. There is always room for both.
We will teach you compassion by practicing compassion with ourselves first; then with each other. We will set and respect boundaries; we will honor hard work, hope and perseverance.
Rest and play will be family values, as well as family practices. You will learn accountability and respect by watching me make mistakes and make amends, and by watching how I ask for what I need and talk about how I feel.
I want you to know joy, so together we will practice gratitude.
I want you to feel joy, so together we will learn how to be vulnerable.
When uncertainty and scarcity visit, you will be able to draw from the spirit that is a part of our everyday life.
Together we will cry and face fear and grief. I will want to take away your pain, but instead I will sit with you and teach you how to feel it.
We will laugh and sing and dance and create. We will always have permission to be ourselves with each other. No matter what you will always belong here.
As you begin your Wholehearted journey, the greatest gift that I can give you is to live and love with my whole heart and dare greatly.
I will not teach or love or show you anything perfectly, but I will let you see me, and I will always hold sacred the gift of seeing you. Truly deeply seeing you.
Let’s take the summer to dance and create, to play and to rest. Let’s enjoy these days of freedom and make the most of the opportunities we have with our children. To know them deeply, to see them deeply, to love them deeply… that would be a job well done!
What could be more exciting than drones, 3D printing, and robotic arms? Innovation Tech Camp, for rising 6th graders-12th graders, is the perfect way to re-engage your teen's brain and kick off the new school year! This year's challenge involves hacking drones to control them via a computer, turning an already fun activity--drones--into an unbelievably fantastic learning opportunity. Don't tell them how much they will learn. Just say, "Want to play with drones and robotics this summer?" and get ready for their neurons to catch fire!
To hear what students have to say about Innovation Tech Camp happening August 6-9th in the High Desert, and to find out more information, visit http://developinginnovators.com/camp. Seats are limited to the first 20 registrations, so don't let your teen miss out!
