February 23, 2017
First, I know that receiving the rezoning news was a shock. Those of us who are aware of the growing number of students at Meadow Glen Elementary knew that this had to happen at some point.
There have been posted community meeting dates in March to share information. I do promise to each of you, barring anything drastic, that I will be at each of the posted community meetings. The final meeting is here at Midway on March 16 at 6:00 p.m. Please know that the presentation will answer many of your questions. You do not need to rush to get all of your answers as there must be two more readings before the board for this proposal to be passed. The second reading is late in March and then the third is in April. The district is accepting questions and has posted the details and maps on the district web-site.
Just as I have ridden buses, held hands in sorrow, celebrated joyous occasions, I will go through this process with you. I know that change is very difficult but we will answer all questions and provide support. With this said I need to ask a huge favor of you. Please, yes, please do not alarm your children at this time. This change is not until next year. We need to support our children in their learning and feeling secure here and now. Together we will work through the adult conversations surrounding what may come. When the final plans are laid, together we will provide support and avenues for any transitions.
Thank you for your help with this. We will work together for the success of our children.
Now, please remember to read and read with our children over the weekend! Have a wonderful weekend and enjoy "our" children!
Yours truly,
Jan Fickling, Principal of Midway Elementary

Midway Elementary School Students and Teachers Rev Up
for NEA's Read Across America Day
Thursday, March 2, 2017
We need you to help us keep the reading going! Our goal is to have readers at Midway every 30 minutes!
Can you sign up for a 30-minute time slot to read to 2-3 classes? You can bring your own books or books will be available for you to read. Talk to the students about the importance of reading at your job as ____________ and for pleasure.
Weather permitting, we will read outside in the bus loop but if necessary, inside at the wi-fi café.
It’s easy! Go to http://www.signupgenius.com/go/10C0F48AFAD2CA5FE3-read and find a time that fits in your schedule.
Questions? Call me Dawn Merck at (803) 261-3567 or send me an email dmerck@lexington1.net. We appreciate your willingness to help and participate in our students’ education.
Thank you!
Dawn Merck
Read Across America Day: How it began...
It began in 1998 with the idea from an NEA's task to have a pep rally for reading. So the idea of Read Across America Day, which celebrates Dr. Seuss's birthday and the joys of reading, was born. Today we expect more than 45 million readers, both young and old, to pick up a book and read.
For more information NEA's Read Across America, visit www.nea.org/readacross and www.readacrossamerica.org and learn of other reading celebrations that are happening from coast to coast.

Latest blog is up! How can you talk to your child about what they are reading if you haven't read the book? It doesn't have to be tricky.
