Gender Equality

Amanda Figueroa-Nieves

The problem

Gender equality is a huge barrier for human development. In many parts of the world, women are denied the same respect and rights as men. "The disadvantages facing women and girls are a major source of inequality. All too often, women and girls are discriminated against in health, education, political representation, labour market, etc — with negative repercussions for development of their capabilities and their freedom of choice." (United Nations Development Programme)

Pros of working towards Gender Equality

  1. We can help millions of women recieve more education, rights, political representation, etc. around the world.
  2. We can increase human development.

What's an organization that can help this cause?

What can you do?

Call to Action

I want to challenge you to take a look at your daily lives and see what you can do to help this problem be eliminated. That could be donating to an organization such as UN Women, or simply standing up to people that discriminate based on gender. Government action is not enough to secure gender equality. We, the people, must become active in protecting the rights that are given to us, in helping other countries defend those rights, and in helping people in other countries acquire these rights.
