High School Weekly Newsletter - May 2, 2021
Even though the end of a school year brings a lot of fun, it also mean that it is time for finals. Please make sure you pay close attention to the AP & regular finals schedule below. In that section it also lists the Final Exam Exemption Policy along with a download of the form for you to print should you want to exempt an exam.
I want to go ahead and let everyone know that we will have no after school clubs the week of 5/24-5/27. Students at home will NOT join their virtual clubs. During that week, dismissal for elementary students at school will take place from 2:30-2:50pm... and 3:15 for middle and high school students. Please plan accordingly. In the event that a family is unable to pick up early, please let us know by reaching out to Ms. Black or Mrs. Sanchez for elementary students, and Mr. Turan or Mr. Parlak for middle and high school students.
Lastly, with the end of another year and summer approaching, we will begin to put out summer course work. More details will be available in the coming weeks but just to be sure you know where to find the information, we will post it in our newsletters when available and it will also be on our school website at the following links.
Again, no work has been posted yet, but over the coming weeks, there will be various assignments for different HS grade levels for students to complete over their summer break.
I hope everyone has a great weekend!
With gratitude,
Dr. Kenan Sener

Superintendent Woods announces 2021 Georgia Scholars - 2 FSA Seniors Named Among Award Recipients
"April 29, 2021 – A total of 323 graduating seniors from across Georgia have been recognized as 2021 Georgia Scholars, State School Superintendent Richard Woods announced today.
Through the Georgia Scholar program, the Georgia Department of Education identifies and honors high school seniors who have achieved excellence in school and community life. Students eligible for Georgia Scholar recognition are high school seniors who exhibit excellence in all phases of school life, in community activities, and in the home. Each Georgia Scholar receives a seal for their diploma.
These students have carried exemplary course loads during their four years of high school; performed excellently in all courses; successfully participated in interscholastic events at their schools and in their communities; and have assumed roles in extracurricular activities sponsored by their schools. Click here for a full list of Georgia Scholar program requirements. Note that the SAT and ACT score requirement was waived this year, as some students were not able to take or retake these exams due to the pandemic.
“As a state, we can all draw inspiration from the resilience and determination of the class of 2021,” Superintendent Woods said. “Like their counterparts in the class of 2020, they dealt with the sudden shutdown of in-person schooling in March of last year. Then they persevered through a school year that was, of necessity, unlike any we have ever seen before – and still, they found a way to excel. I am extremely proud of each 2021 Georgia Scholar and can’t wait to see what this outstanding group of students accomplishes.”
The Georgia Scholar program is managed by GaDOE’s Excellence Recognition office and through local coordinators in each public school system and private schools throughout the state." (Original Press Release)
We'd like to congratulate FSA's Georgia Scholars, 2021 seniors Dongjoon Jeong and Sydney Jones! We are so proud of you!

Virtual Opportunity | Summer STEM Institute
The Summer STEM Institute (SSI) is a six-week virtual summer program for high school students. The program was started last summer by educators, students, and graduates from Stanford, Harvard, and MIT to continue educational opportunities during COVID-19. Last year, SSI received over 2,450 applications from students in 78 different countries. We previously received an application from a student at fulton science academy private school, and we thought your students may be interested in applying this year, especially since many extracurricular activities and summer programs are still cancelled due to COVID-19.
SSI consists of three main parts:
- Research and data science bootcamp: Students learn how to design and conduct data science research projects. Students learn about the research process and how to apply statistical and machine learning methods to address scientific questions with real-world impact.
- Masterclass lecture series: Students are connected to accomplished young adults around the world. Students have the opportunity to learn about entrepreneurship from Forbes 30 Under 30 recipients, science research from International Science and Engineering Fair (ISEF) grand prize winners, and other topics from speakers with diverse backgrounds and experiences.
- Mentored research project: Students complete a research project through a rigorous, hands-on learning experience under the guidance of mentors. Previously, students have worked in a variety of fields, from computational biology to quantum physics. You can view previous research projects students have conducted on the program website.
Many students who attended the program last year said SSI changed their lives and asked for our team to continue running SSI in future years.
Students and families can learn more about SSI and apply on their website here: https://www.summersteminstitute.org/

How Does Aftercare Work for High School Students?
High School Families,
We would like to openly tell you that when more students stay for after school care, it will be harder for us to protect the safety of after school care students during the pandemic. Therefore, If your child is not staying for After-School Clubs or Tutoring, we strongly ask you to pick up your child between 3:16 pm and 3:40 pm.
If your child stays for After-School Clubs or Tutoring, please pick-up your child between 4:00 pm - 4:10 pm.
After school care begins at 4:10 pm and continues until 5:30 pm.
For those students who regularly use after school care, we recommend the monthly payment plan to save money. After school care fee is $20 per day for the monthly payment plan. If you are not interested in a monthly registration, you will indicate this on the form sent in your email. You will be charged $30 per day as you use after school care. After 5:30, the fee increases to $40, and $1 is added for each minute after 6:00. If a student is not taken by 7:00 pm, we will inform the local safety authorities for the safety of the student.
If your child will be joining after school care, you will follow the drive to pass the front of the school and park your car at the far end of the building. After parking your car, you will enter through the courtyard entrance. You will not come inside the school building. Please enter the courtyard, and knock on the door "L25" for Middle School and "HS Hangout" for High School students. The images below will help you to see where to park, enter the courtyard, and pick up your child. Please make sure to have your carpool card with you. Please make sure to be wearing a mask, and please maintain social distancing while traveling up the stairs to get your child. Once you have picked up your child, please exit from the same courtyard entrance.
Please note: families are not permitted to gather and remain in the courtyard area after picking up their children.
