Overthrow for the Hawaiian Kingdom
Thesis
On January 17, 1893, the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom would not have been possible without the help of President Benjamin Harrison, President William McKinley and Minister John L Stevens.
President Grover Cleveland
President Cleveland's role during the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom made a huge impact on others. Cleveland was an Anti-Imperialist who had take office recently. On January 17, 1893, they had announced the overthrow of the Queens government. Queen Lydia Kamakeaha Liliuokalani called the U.S government to reverse the actions that the representatives had done. However, the U.S refused to help the queen regain her throne. In 1917, Queen Liliuokalani dies and Hawaii is a territory of the United States. In 1873, the American Business mens, President Harrison, and the congress to annex the Islands of Hawaii. President Grover Cleveland withdrew the Treaty of Annexation sent our to the Senate from President Harrison. He did so because it was for the purposes of "re-examination". President Cleveland received and replaced the American stars and Stripes of the American Flag on the Hawaiian Flag. President Cleveland wrote that the "provisional government owes it's existence to an armed invasion by the U.S ...by an act of war... a substantial wrong has been done." President Cleveland refuses to annex the Hawaiian Islands but was rejected by the congress.
Minister John L. Stevens
Minister Stevens duty was to protect the Americans when he came down to Hawaii. He held the political office as well and was president during the reign of King Kalakaua. Minister John L. Stevens was siding with the Americans including the Political Representatives of U.S. Stevens was racist and believes that the Hawaiians were child like and said that they were unfit to rule. During his reign, there was an organization called, "The Committee of Safety," which was organized by Stevens himself and Stanford B. Dole. They both also supported the idea of "Coup de tat" which is a sudden reaction in the change of government. He then recognizes a new type of government and proclaimed Hawaii to the U.S. Stanford B. Dole makes a Treaty of Annexation and sends it to the Senate which got a majority of votes. Minister John L. Stevens worked closely with the new government.
President William McKinley
President McKinley was a replacement for President Cleveland. He was a new imperialist and was in favor of the annexation of Hawaii and then signed the Treaty of Annexation. The treaty was defeated in the Senate. The Joint Resolution is a simple majority of votes which in both houses was signed into lands. McKinley and three other representatives of government signed the Treaty of Annexation. The queen delegates and submits the petition. He then submits the Treaty to the Senate of Ratification. president William McKinley was apart of the Spanish American War where it took place in Philippines as a strategic value and location. Hawaii was made a territory and Dole became the first Governor. The united States concluded a friendly treaty that served as a basis between the parties. The United states came in to dominate the economy and politics. The Treaty of Annexation was then submitted and confirmed. Hawaii was then under the territory of the United States.
Historical Significance
On January 17, 1893, the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom would not have been possible without the help of President Grover Cleveland, Minister John L. Stevens and President William McKinley. This topic is important in history because it made an impact on the Hawaiians. Hawaii was a home to them and it was pretty much invaded. But I think if this situation of the Annexation of Hawaii wasn't going to happen, then we wouldn't have learned much things that the foreigners and missionaries came to teach us.
Is Hawaii legally and lawfully a state of the union?
After studying the Overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom, my opinion about Hawaii being legally and lawfully of the state is that I think it's good. I say this because if it wasn't for them to annex Hawaii, we wouldn't have been a stronger and dominate state. I believe that they had a good reason to annex Hawaii and Overthrow the kingdom, not only to take away our independence and freedom as a state.
This picture shows the Ku'e Petition. This is the paper of document where those who doesn't want Hawaii to be Annexed. It was not only signed from Oahu but also signed throughout the 7 other islands of Hawaii. This petition was a document to show the U.S that they are better off alone and don't need to be under anyone's territory. Hawaii is an independent state which makes them want to encourage the U.S to not take them in.
