A Shift That Makes Sense
Dear Cougar Family,
During our professional learning in August, the concept of disciplinary literacy was introduced. Rather than adding the same list of reading strategies to all content areas, disciplinary literacy empowers teachers as experts of their content to show students how to read, write, and think as practitioners of the discipline. I have been excited to see literacy practices overtly spreading throughout CSHS from PE classes, to foods, to math, and to science (just to name a few examples I saw last week).
In her article published on ASCD online, "Disciplinary Literacy: A Shift That Makes Sense," Releah Lent provides an insightful overview of disciplinary literacy, emphasizing that "through disciplinary literacy, we can create readers and writers who come to use literacy for its highest purpose—learning—with an expert by their side, a content area teacher who not only understands the subject but also how to use literacy to unlock it." I urge you to take a look at this article this week to keep this concept at the forefront of your thinking as you design learning experiences for our Cougars.
May you all have a magnificent week! As always, COUGAR PRIDE!

Join the NEW CSHS Remind Account(s)!
We now have two groups, and we will discontinue use of our previous Remind group. Please click here for instructions on how to join the appropriate group based on your last name. We will send the same message to both groups. We will use these Remind groups for fun reminders along with important information on emergency drills, etc., so make sure you join!
Important Reminders About Visitors & Deliveries
Notes from Rachel at the front desk:
1. If you are expecting a guest speaker, please remember that they MUST first have been cleared by HR and filled out the appropriate application form to be a guest speaker for your class. This entire process takes around two weeks, so please plan accordingly and have your guest fill out the application in plenty of time.
2. Former students are not allowed to visit with teachers unless there have been prior arrangements made with that teacher. If you have a student you are meeting with, please let Rachel Tydlacka know via email in advance or the student will not be allowed to go to your classroom.
3. If you have ordered food from a delivery service, please do not send a student down to get it. We have had many students state the food is for their "teacher" when in fact it was for them, but we can not always double check this. In all fairness to the other students, please pick up your own lunches from delivery services to avoid confusion.
4. If you are expecting a visitor to arrive after 4:00 pm, please be aware that the front doors are locked at that time to prevent students from re-entering the building. Please come to the front office to greet your guests and escort them to your meeting place.
