QUOTE FOR THE PRINCIPAL'S JOURNEY
UPDATE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, Clark Mershon
School Wellness Symposium
We are excited to host a groundbreaking event in Columbia, November 17-18, entitled "School Wellness Symposium--Building Bridges Together." We all desire to have schools and communities where there is a calmness that is built on healthy relationships and healthy living. Please consider attending or better yet, send a team of educators from your school or district. Click the link for more information.
Vaping
We applaud Governor Parson and his executive order this week on vaping. The executive order requires three state agencies, within 30 days, to develop a public service campaign about the dangers of vaping among Missouri's youth. The three state agencies are the Department of Health and Senior Services, the Department of Elementary and Secondary Education and the Department of Public Safety. To access the entire Legislative Bulletin that was sent Wednesday, click here. If you are in need of a speaker regarding the dangers of vaping, you might check out the Chris Jenson link. As a member of MoASSP, each of you should have received an email from Ed Leaders Network when you joined or renewed for 2019-2020. Here are a couple of links regarding the vape course just released by ELN.
Big Changes to ACT
I have included important information in this Messenger that was just released a week ago from ACT. Since I serve as Vice-Chair of the Missouri ACT Council, if you have feedback regarding the ACT, please send me an email at cmershon@moassp.org.
Annual Performance Report (APR) Scores Released Yesterday
The 2019 APR scores were released yesterday with a new format. The changes include color-coded graphics showing growth, status and progress measures. Click here to access the State of Missouri, District, Charter, and School scores. As reported in the Springfield News-Leader yesterday, Dr. Margie Vandeven commented, "We would really like our schools and districts and charter schools to be focused on the data and not just necessarily the points earned. Once they get a score, a lot of times we tend to gloss over the underlying data."
State Board Meets Monday and Tuesday Next Week
Whether you are aspiring, emerging, developing, or transformational, wherever you are on the “Principal’s Journey," it is a “matter of principal(ple).” Clark Mershon

CALL TO ACTION ADDRESSING TEACHER & PRINCIPAL SHORTAGES
As we continue to bring attention to National Principals Month, we wanted to send a big push this week from our MoASSP membership to contact their federal legislators regarding the Preparing and Retaining Education Professionals Act of 2018” or the “PREP Act of 2018”. We need Congress to address teacher and principal shortages. As we travel the state, we continue to hear concerns from principals related to this issue. We appreciate you clicking on this link and send a message to your officials in DC. Thanks for helping us continue the push to compel Congress to address teacher and principal shortages and for helping amplify National Principals Month! Clark Mershon, Executive Director
MoASSP VISITS CAPITOL HILL
U.S. Missouri Senator Roy Blunt met yesterday with MoASSP President, Marc Spunaugle and State Coordinator, Chris Hoehne.
U.S. Representative Blaine Luetkemeyer for Missouri's 3rd Congressional District
U.S. Representative from Missouri's 4th Congressional District Vicky Hartzler
Missouri State Senator Visits Monroe City High School
Monroe City High School Principal and MoASSP member, John Fortney, hosted a visit by Missouri State Senator from District 18, Cindy O'Laughlin, this week in recognition of National Principals Month. The fall is an excellent time of the year to invite lawmakers into schools. Now is the time to start or strengthen a relationship with your elected official(s). You will help to educate them on important issues before the legislative session begins in January. Having them interact with staff and students will also provide essential insights for them. As they deliberate on educational issues during the legislative session, they will reflect on their visit to your school. FIND YOUR LEGISLATOR
