The Weekly Update
Aug 28-Sept 1
Welcome to the 2017-18 School Year!
I hope that each of you had a restful summer that was full of adventures and that you are ready to start an amazing new school year. I welcome and value each of you and your scholar for your dedication to excellent education.
All indicators point to an incredible school year. Our skilled and devoted staff have spent the summer preparing and planning to stretch minds through engaging projects that focus on rigorous content and the application of real-world skills.
A great deal of thought, analysis, time and effort has gone into preparing for the 2017-18 school year. Students were carefully and skillfully placed in courses to ensure maximum acquisition of skills and knowledge. Thank you for understanding that with each new year, change takes place. It might take several weeks for scholars to be acclimated to their new schedules, classes, and classmates. As partners together, we can ensure that students are supported through their transition. We strive for school to be a positive experience for each scholar.
It remains an honor and privilege to serve as a leader at FCS. Thank you to each person who played a role in ensuring a positive start to the school year. Your commitment to ensuring FCS is a celebrated and successful school is awe-inspiring. Together this year will be a school year of exploration, growth, and achievement for all children.
Sincerely,
Melanie Shaver

Summer Reading
As a kick off to our Academic Advisory, we have chosen "The 7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens" to be the basis for great habits to ensure a great year. The summer reading assignment can be found here (click here) and allows students the ability to choose a reflective process to decipher what they have learned.
If you do not have your book, you can pick one up M-Th at the FCS/WMMS front desk (M-Th). Or you can access the online PDF (click here). If you have not received your book, please send you name and address to melanie.shaver@mcdowell.k12.nc.us
(Your summer reading assignment will be due Sept. 5th).
Why read during the summer?
Research consistently shows that students who actively read during the summer do not experience the same level of learning loss as those who do not read during the summer. Plus, it’s fun! Each student will demonstrate an understanding ELA skills and concepts through self-decided activities.
Please be aware:
7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens addresses some mature issues. If you do not feel like your student is ready to address some of the issues addressed, feel free to skip over the section in Habit 7 or read, discuss and look at those things together as a family.
