News from the Library Media Center

Welcome Back! I hope everyone is settled in by now. Newsletters will be sent out periodically to inform you of learning resources, new books, programs, projects, tech tips, special events and other news. By the way, if you're looking to do a newsletter check out http://www.smore.com/app It's easy and best of all it's free!

Ask us about any resources you need. We have digital cameras and Flip video cameras to lend. We can help you find resources for your projects. We can also help you find scholarly resources if you need them for a class. Don't hestitate to ask for help.

Library Orientations

Library orientations will begin soon. We will be working around the Book Fair to schedule the seventh grade LA classes. Students will create a library account which will enable them to check out books once they learn how to use Destiny, our library circulation system.

Lunchtime at the Library

Students may visit the library during their lunch periods to work on homework, use the computers, take out books and/or read. Lunch passes are sent to the cafeteria each day. If you would like students to finish work during their lunch time, please instruct the students to go to the cafeteria for a pass. Please do not issue any of your own passes for a student to come to the library during their lunch time. Students must go to the cafeteria to pick up a pass and then come to the library. Thank you for your cooperation.

Symbaloo is a great resource to share your links. I've created a Webmix with many of the Web 2.0 tools we learned about this summer during the tech training and I've added some library links, research databases and some tools that I knew about. I thought it would be helpful to have all the links in one place. The Symbaloo webmix is located on the LMS website on the LMS Library page. http://www.passaic-city.k12.nj.us/education/components/scrapbook/default.php?sectiondetailid=3652&

It is also located at the following link:

Hispanic Heritage Month Essay Contest

The Library is once again sponsoring the Cablevision Hispanic Heritage Month essay contest. This year's topic is "Who is a Latino you admire and why?" Prizes include a $2500 grand prize, a tablet, a laptop and a netbook.

You can pick up the entry forms and the rules in the library.

Last year we had a 1st place winner who won a laptop. Let's see if we can get another student to write a winning essay.

Boxtops for Education

We are collecting BoxTops to raise money for new window blinds for the library. So far we are 3/4 of the way to our goal. With your help we can reach our goal by the November collection deadline. Please tell your students to collect BoxTops and please remember to collect them yourselves. Thank you. Together we can achieve our goal. LMS is also a beneficiary of Target's Take Charge for Education Program. If you shop at Target and use a Target Credit Card, you can designate LMS to receive a donation from Target. Our school ID is 73726.

Book Fair

The Book Fair is coming! LMS Library will be hosting a Fall Book Fair October 8th- October 19th. This is the perfect opportunity for your students to purchase books for free independent reading. We are scheduling classes now. Please sign up to bring your Language Arts class to the Fair. Classes only need to be at the Fair for a few minutes to preview and then individual students may return to purchase books on a later day.
