International Baccalaureate Corner: December's Learner Profile Attribute - Communicator
The IB Learner profile aims to develop students who are communicators. Students who are communicators understand and express ideas and information confidently and creatively in more than one language and in a variety of modes of communication. They listen carefully as well as work effectively and willingly in collaboration with others.
At Franklin Academy, we believe that communication, in its many forms, facilitates the exchange of information and knowledge, and is vital when developing relationships of all kinds. From sharing information during parent night, to greeting a child with a smiling face in the morning, communication is what connects us.
What does a communicator look like?
Students who are Communicators express their ideas by speaking, drawing, and writing. They communicate through music, dance, and drama. Language is key to expressing themselves and they can communicate in more than one language.
Being a good listener is an important part of communicating with others too. Through active listening, students show empathy and gain new ideas, perspectives, and insights.
This is a great video with more insight into the Communicator trait: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5M98sL812Qc
How can parents help to develop students who are Communicators at home?
Take turns speaking and listening to one another about your daily events.
Explore other forms of communication including symbols, signs, and sounds.
Read a variety of texts and find connections between the books and your child's life.
Discuss the TV programs and videos you watch together.
Make books, magazines, and other reading material readily available.
Take time to listen to your child when he/she talks with you, by turning off technology and providing undivided attention.
Ask questions about what they are saying, ask for explanations.
Act out stories, plays, poems, use language in fun creative ways.
Sing together.
Support other forms of communication via art, dance, music etc.
Take a look at this link for a list of picture books about communication, as well as resources that help emphasize effective communication techniques to avoid misunderstanding and build trust.
Way Home Form - Have you completed the form yet?
You will need to complete this form if you change your child's way home.
If you are changing it just for the day, please email the teacher(s) and the front desk.
