No School Monday, February 18th
School closing alerts
Morning routines
- Students are outside before school, unless the temperature is below zero, then we are in the gym. Students and families are not allowed to congregate in the building before school.
- The front driveway is for bus traffic only. Please DO NOT use this area for student drop off. Students walking from the parking spots and buses are not a good mix.
- Please pull all the way forward in the drop off lane and have your child ready to exit the vehicle on the passenger side.
- Plan ahead, getting to school right at 8:00 makes for a hectic start to your child's day. The drop off lane gets backed up close to 8:00, coming a few minutes earlier makes for a stress-free start to the day.
- The drop off lane doors are locked at 8:00. Students arriving after 8:00 are late and must check in the office for a tardy pass.

February Title Reading Tip
CAFÉ Strategy: Reread Text
Dear Families,
As your child is progressing through the year, we would like to update you with another CAFÉ strategy to reinforce at home. CAFÉ is an acronym that stands for Comprehension (I understand what I read), Accuracy (I can read the words), Fluency (I can read smoothly and understand what I read), and Expanding vocabulary (I know, find, and use interesting words).
Have you ever heard someone read choppy and without expression? Broken reading is often hard to listen to, sounds awkward, and decreases comprehension. A fluent reader, on the other hand, reads accurately and with expression. The text flows with appropriate speed so the reader is able to understand what is being read. Many times children who struggle with fluency lose interest and do not want to read.
Does your child read slowly? Does he/she read choppy and often lose track of his/her place when reading? Does he/she lack expression? Does your child often get frustrated when reading and quit? If this applies, rereading text is an excellent strategy to help your child.
How to help your child with the rereading text strategy at home:
Have your child choose a different paragraph from the story they are reading each day. Have them reread that paragraph until they can read it smoothly, with expression, and read all the words correctly. This practice doesn’t take long, only five to eight minutes each day.
Remind your child that he/she must be reading from a good-fit book. If the book is too difficult, your child’s energy will be spent on decoding words and not on fluent reading.
Model what fluent reading sounds like by reading aloud to your child. Then, have your child reread a paragraph they have heard you read.
Thank you for your continued support!
