Fraction Boot Camp
Math Workshop Series for Grade 3-5 Teachers
Three (3) Day Workshop Series (September to December 2020)
We look forward to your participation in this three (3) day professional development series presented by the Midwest Regional Educational Service Center (MRESC).
Dates: Day 1 - September 24th; Day 2 - October 20, 2020; Day 3 - November 11, 2020
Instructor: Barb Weidus, Math Content Specialist & Veteran Trainer
Target Audience: Grade 3-5 Teachers
Participants will review essential concepts and strategies for the teaching of fractions (based on Ohio's Learning Standards). From there, attendees will move to the crucial conceptual understandings of what fractions are in grades 3 and 4.
- The use of the Standards for Mathematical Practice (along with the cognitive demands) will be front and center to our learning.
By the end of day 2, we will begin building our conceptual knowledge of operations in fractions. Day 3 will be spent in operations with fractions.
- Be prepared to "play" (use visual models such as Cuisenaire rods, geoboards, patty paper, pattern blocks, etc.) throughout the series.
Attendees will also dig in to see what questions from the AIR assessment tell us as well.
**Participating educators should plan to attend all three days of the series.
