Workshop Overview:
Participants will review essential concepts and strategies for the teaching of fractions (based on Ohio's Learning Standards). From there, attendees will move to the crucial conceptual understandings of what fractions are in grades 3, 4, and 5.
- The use of the Standards for Mathematical Practice (along with the cognitive demands) will be front and center to our learning.
By the end of day 2, we will begin building our conceptual knowledge of operations in fractions. Day 3 will be spent in operations with fractions.
- Be prepared to "play" (use visual models such as Cuisenaire rods, geoboards, patty paper, pattern blocks, etc.) throughout the series.
Attendees will also dig in to see what questions from the state assessment tell us as well.
