A Monthly Parent Newsletter - May 2019

Superintendent's Message

Today begins one of the most important months so far in the lives of our high school seniors - it's the month they will graduate and begin the next exciting chapter in their lives.

It's my honor to participate with our School Board in the ceremonies, which this year will celebrate the commencement of more than 3,000 members of our Class of 2019. If you've never attended, you're welcome to join us and cheer on your community's future leaders. The schedule is posted in the Upcoming Events calendar at the end of this newsletter.

We'll provide you with another newsletter as we end the school year to share information about summer programs including how we provide breakfast and lunches over the break to students in need.

One summer program you don't want to miss is our newly expanded CCSD Summer Discovery week-long enrichment camp! More details are below about this very popular program started in the BridgeMill/Sixes community that's now open to all CCSD elementary school students. The course catalog is filled with choices like hands-on STEM activities, sports and arts-and-crafts -- it makes me wish I could go! Applications are due by Friday, May 3.

We're also accepting applications for our third annual VILLA parent academy program that provides parents with an in-depth and behind-the-scenes look at their School District. This year, we're expanding the popular free six-week program to two sessions - one in the morning and one in the evening. More information is online here.

Sincerely,

Dr. Brian V. Hightower

Superintendent of Schools

P.S. Please mark Tuesday, May 7, on your calendar - it's National Teacher Appreciation Day. I can't say enough about our outstanding teachers and the professionalism, care and joy they show in the classroom each day. I hope you'll joining me in thanking them.

CFO Earns Superintendent's Top Honor for Advocacy!

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Brian V. Hightower honored CCSD's Chief Financial Officer with the third of his four top annual awards for instructional excellence!

Dr. Hightower surprised CFO Kenneth Owen with his Superintendent’s 2019 Game Changer Award for Instructional Leadership during a morning meeting of senior staff, who rose to their feet to honor their colleague.

“Very few school districts can be reassured in knowing their CFO actually understands curriculum, but if you know Ken, you know he began his career in that office working in grants,” Dr. Hightower said, as he presented Mr. Owen with the award. “He supports curriculum and instruction and, ultimately, he knows where we should be fighting for critical funds to be spent – and that’s in the classroom. We’re very fortunate to have Ken: he gets it, he leads, and we’re so proud he’s a part of our organization.”
