Is eating organic products better for your health v.s conventional products?

Studies have shown that when people start eating organic foods their health increases. When you drink whole milk from organc daries, you will ingest some of the fatty acids that contribute to a healthy heart. The milk offers a nutritional advantage over its conventional counterpart.

What does organic mean?

The term “organic” refers to the way agricultural products are grown and processed. Specific requirements must be met and maintained in order for products to be labeled as "organic." Organic crops must be grown in safe soil and they must be separated from conventional products. Organic livestock must have access to the outdoors and be given organic feed.

The dirty dozen consists of foods that contain high amounts of pesticides. If you wanted to buy any of these foods you should consider buying them organically. The clean 15 contains low amounts of perticides. Most of these foods have coatings that people don't eat.

Organic vs conventional

Organic

- Use natural fertilizers such as manure or compost to nourish soil and promote plant growth

- Rotate crops, use mulch or hand weed to provide beneficial crop hygiene, remove pests, and reduce disease

- Give organic feed to animals and allow them access to open pasture while utilizing rotational grazing patterns

Conventional

- Use synthetic or chemical fertilizers often containing nitrates to promote plant grwoth

- Use herbicides to kill off weeds and insecticides to kill off insects and bugs in order to reduce disease

- Use antibiotics, growth hormones, and medications in animals to prevent disease and promote growth

Vocabulary

Conventional Products- Itis the opposite to organic growing methods which attempt to produce without synthetic chemicals.

Organic Products- Meat, eggs, and dairy products with the organic label must have come from animals fed organic feed (which means non-GMO). They were given fresh air and outdoor access and raised without antibiotics or added growth hormones.

GMO- Genetically modified organisms. Living organisms whose genetic material has been artificially manipulated in a lab through genetic engineering.
