COUNSELOR'S CORNER: February Character Counts is Fairness
COUNSELOR’S CORNER
Last month students learned about responsibility, and in the month February students will be learning about fairness. As a reminder, character education starts at home through teaching, reinforcing, advocating, and modeling positive character behaviors.
Fairness: equitableness ~ justice ~ being impartial ~ having integrity ~ being considerate of others ~ balance ~ evenhandedness ~ showing good sportsmanship ~ maintaining tolerance
Here are some ways you can teach fairness at home:
Modeling fair behaviors such as: playing by the rules
Explain why playing games by a set of rules helps encourage fairness
Practice turn-taking when playing games
Encourage each other even when playing fair means an unhappy outcome in the game
Recognize and verbalize when your child is acting out of fairness
Read a book about fairness such as: “That’s Not Fair!: A Book About How Fair Is Not Always Equal” or “The Youngest Marcher” or “The Little Red Hen” or “Jamaica Tag-Along”
Talk about fairness during dinner or before bed
Have conversations about fairness that are related to your child’s favorite tv show, movie, book, video game, etc.
Explain that fairness isn’t about everything being equal but about leveling the playing field so that everyone gets what they need when they need it

JME SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR
STOMP, CHOMP and READ: Book Fair is coming!
Our Scholastic Book Fair is coming soon and we hope you and your child will be able to join us! Stomp into our Dino-Mite Library on February 26-28, to visit the fair, read and shop for book. There’s a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level.
When you visit, please consider donating a book to your child’s classroom library. Children’s reading interests are always changing and teachers welcome updated classroom libraries. Just look for the Teacher Classroom Wish List display at the fair. Your generosity will be appreciated!
If you are unable to attend the Fair in person, I invite you to visit our Online Fair at Schloastic.com/fair. Our Online Fair is available from February 17th - March 9th.
I look forward to seeing you and your family at our Book Fair. Remember all purchases benefit our school. Thank you for supporting our readers!
