In The Know
Voice Mail - Please be sure to check your voicemail and refresh the message as needed. Some answering machines have old names or information that need updating.
AVID Certification - Curriculum Council recently began disseminating the indicators within the Instructional Domain of the AVID Coaching and Certification instruments. Team leaders will be discussing this in PLC's in the weeks to come. What does this mean to you? We are looking for examples of how you engage the following strategies: Writing to Learn, Technology as a Tool for Collaboration, and Organizational Tools. I will be sending a separate email detailing what this looks like in practice and how you can submit evidence.
January 31st - No official staff meeting. Instead we will be hosting the faculty from A.T.A. and Kennedy Middle School (as we have in the past) for a morning of teacher led professional development. We will be meeting in the auditorium at 8:00am (come early for food). We will have an opening, followed by 3-4 break out sessions, and conclude with a student keynote presentation. Lunch will be catered at 12:00 noon. The afternoon is left alone for teacher grading and planning. Staff are required to attend.
Black History Month - Is coming up next Month. We are very excited here at Churchill with a wide range of activities designed to bring awareness and focus to the African American community and their contributions to our community. In addition to continuing our Black Lives Matter exhibit, students have also planned a spirit week, and a variety of other activities that enhance our Churchill Community. The spirit week will run from Feb 3rd-7th: Monday Jersey Day, Tuesday African American Quote Day (wear clothing to support Black History Month), Wednesday Hoodies Up, Thursday Throwback Day, Friday Flag Day (each grade wears a different color). During one of the days during lunch at the rock we will have students of color representing their talent (singing, dancing, etc.). We are excited to be a part of the planning and work that the students at Churchill and Black Student Union are bringing forward. Many thanks to the teachers who over the years have made meaningful connections that African American scholars, activists, and prominent leaders have made to their content areas. We look forward to seeing this again.
Message from the Oregon Department of Transportation - Something big is happening October first of this year. If you aren’t paying attention, it might mean missing your flight out of PDX or any other airport across the U.S.
On that date the Transportation Security Administration, or TSA, begins requiring a new type of identification to board a commercial aircraft. The new ID must be compliant with something called the Real ID Act. It’s designed to keep us safer in the air, but if you try to board an aircraft using your current Oregon driver license starting in October – it won’t work. That’s because the current Oregon driver license is not Real ID compliant.
Oregon DMV will begin offering a Real ID option on July 6, 2020. To fulfill the demand of nearly one million Oregonians who will want the Real ID option, DMV would have to issue 32 licenses a second every business day from July to October. That’s just not possible.
If you don’t have a Real ID compliant form of ID at the airport, TSA will put you through an alternate identity verification process that could take an hour or more, and you could miss your flight.
There is an answer for Oregonians: obtain and use a passport or passport card. The cost of getting a new passport card is roughly equal to that of getting a replacement license with the Real ID option – and you can apply now at one of over 76 acceptance sites across Oregon.
To find out more, visit https://www.Oregon.gov/REALID
By the way, Washingtonians already have the option of getting a Real ID compliant driver license. If you are a Washington resident, go to https://id2020wa.com/ to find out more.
Looking Forward

Kudos
Huge shout out to Claire Bierman in the Health Clinic. She went above and beyond in making phone calls on behalf of a student who lost his glasses. Thanks to Claire our student will have a new pair of glasses in a couple of weeks. We can't thank you enough for all you do for our kids.
Scott Johnson - Thank you for your vigilant eye. You have definitely coalesced with the student body and been a supporting factor in kids going to class. Students are realizing that you and Guy are everywhere and that the need to be in class is a priority. Thank you for helping that happen. We appreciate you.
Nita Halstead - Thank you Nita for all the work you have done with 504 accommodations and student needs. Your job is simply overwhelming and you dedicate so much of your personal time making sure student needs are met. I am proud to have you on staff and your work with teachers is exemplary.
Keith Fjordbeck - You never realize how much you miss someone until they are gone. Keith, your presence at CHS is immeasurable. You do so much on any given day. We miss you and look forward to seeing you soon. Enjoy your time. Thank you very much to Larry Tonn for your amazing back up support. You have made things smooth and efficient. We are fortunate to have your help.
