Carleton Washburne
Monday Memo (On a Tuesday) - May 31, 2022
Washburne Families,
We hope that everyone enjoyed the nice weather and had a safe holiday weekend. We have a number of activities packed into these last two weeks of school, and are excited to celebrate a great school year with our students. For the first time since 2019, we were able to have our entire student body and almost 100 parents and family members join us for our annual awards assembly on Friday. I can’t express enough how awesome it was to have our whole building together to celebrate our amazing students.
We are excited to host Field Day this Thursday, June 2nd (fingers crossed for good weather), and we want to thank our Kinetic Wellness staff and many parent volunteers in advance for your help in coordinating and running this day.
Also, please join us tonight, Tuesday, May 31st @ 7:30pm in the Little Theater for this year's Musical Theatre production, On Broadway. No advanced tickets are necessary, so come on out and support the talented cast and amazing Stagecraft crew in what is sure to be a great celebration of the end of the school year!
We wanted to pass along a reminder from our PTO that volunteer sign-up information for the 2022-23 school year will be sent out later this week. We are so thankful for the collaborative partnership from our PTO and parent community.
Thank you for your continued support.
Take Care and Be Well,
Andrew Fenton & Ben Horwitz
Washburne Principal & Assistant Principal

After back-to-back years of cancellations due to the pandemic, we were so happy to bring back Civil War Day for our 7th grade students this year. Over the course of the year, students have been studying American history in social studies classes, including the period of time leading up to the Civil War and the details of the war itself. On Civil War Day, historical reenactors taught our students many different aspects of life during that time, everything from life on the battlefield to medicine and music to photography. Later in the day, students were treated to a presentation from Abraham and Mary Todd Lincoln, who recounted details from Lincoln’s early life and Presidency.
Kudos to all of our social studies teachers, Ms. Gylling, Mr. Hovis, Mr. Rice, Mr. Senechal, and Ms. Zuehl, for planning such an interactive day of learning for our students.
What's Happening in Related Studies
The Creative Writing students are putting the finishing touches on their fiction stories. With this assignment, they had free rein to write in any genre: historical fiction, sci-fi, realistic fiction, or fantasy. The story ideas are as diverse as the students. They feature spies, Cambodia, zombies, climate scientists, and even Batman! The unit included lessons on building suspense, punctuating dialogue, and paragraphing effectively. We will celebrate the end of the trimester by having a popcorn party and reading each other’s stories.
Wordmasters
Two teams representing Carleton Washburne recently earned Highest Honors in the 2021-22 WordMasters Challenge -- a national vocabulary competition involving nearly 125,000 students annually.
The WordMasters Competition consists of three meets throughout the year. Students are required not only to learn challenging vocabulary words, but also to be able to complete high-level analogies using these words. The Team Revelation seventh graders placed fourth nationally in the overall competition with a cumulative score of 560 points out of a possible 600, while Revelation 8th graders also earned a cumulative 560 points to finish in 6th place nationwide.
Congratulations to all our WordMasters!
