August 2022 newsletter

A new year!

Dear St. Matthew families and supporters,

Welcome back to a new school year! We are pleased to welcome 184 students to our school. That is the highest enrollment in over 10 years. God is good! We are pleased to have so many supportive families

We've started some new initiatives including Friendzy our bible-based Social Emotional Learning program. This supports our framework for PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Support) by connecting our interactions with each other, friendships, and our own feelings and well-being. Along with this we are working on being relational to each other- building relationships of trust and teamwork.

We will continue to share our monthly accomplishments and news with you and appreciate your support.

Student of the Month

Big picture
Congratulations to Olivia Haydon who was selected as August's student of the month! Olivia is one of the friendliest 2nd graders who loves to share her joy with her classmates. Olivia has chosen "Board games with 2 friends and Mrs. Palmer" as her prize for being student of the month. Congratulations Olivia!

Welcome back to All School Masses

Our K-8 students came back to mass for the first time this school year on August 24. A group of 8th graders led us in singing in the choir, along with Mrs. Price.

August 31 our Pre-K students joined us for the first time and sat with their prayer partner classes: Mrs. White's class is paired with our 8th graders and Mrs. Songcuan/Bohaty's class is paired with 5th grade. Our 8th graders did a great job of serving mass and reading.

Welcome New Teachers

We are pleased to have some great teachers joining our staff for the first time.

Teachers Serving Others

Part of our mission is to serve others. Our teachers prepared 200 meals for the Open Door Mission.

Mrs. Holdcroft then delivered the lunches to The Open Door Mission for them to distribute to the community. It is amazing what you can do when you work together!

Back to School Pool Party

St. Matthew PTO put on our annual Pool Party held at Cascio Pool on August 7. Students and families had fun reconnecting and meeting new friends before school started.

Updates from our first weekend of games

The 5th Grade ‘Spardinals’ (combo of St Mary Spartans and St Matthew Cardinals) took St Patrick from Elkhorn to 3 sets. Here’s what Coach Ali had to say about their opening game: ‘I am sooo sooo proud of these girls today! We gave them a match! I really felt we moved to the ball well today. Once we get to know each other more and play more, we will be better.' And even better was that everyone had at least one serve go over the net last weekend.

The 6th Grade girls went three sets with St Margaret Mary. We stayed with St MM in the first set, only losing 19-25. We started a comeback with a 5 point serving run by #15, but it wasn’t quite enough. But in the 2nd set, #21 went on an 8 point serving spree, which gave us a 25-21 win. Every player scored at least one point in the 2nd set. We had some awesome passing by players, who do not always believe in themselve. But everyone played awesome!! We needed to serve a little stronger in the third set, but what an exciting match it was.

7th grade Coaches Jen and Jeremiah had this to say about the 7th grade team: ‘Great start to the season! Lots of nerves in the first game, but awesome to see progress. The girls are working hard at staying in system. Proud of them. Go Cardinals!!’ The Cardinals played OLL Panthers, losing in 2 sets. But we know there are plenty of wins out there. Next time is our time!
