Many states, including Illinois, have passed a law with the intent of increasing awareness of child sexual abuse. You may have heard of this legislation under its more common name, Erin’s Law, in honor of Erin Merryn, a young woman who has traveled across the country advocating for laws that will increase awareness of this crime against children. One of the requirements of this law is that schools provide an age-appropriate curriculum to all students relating to sexual abuse prevention. The purpose of the lessons is to provide students with the tools they need for personal safety and to help them build confidence in advocating for themselves.
Developmentally appropriate lessons will be conducted with Barrington High School students on the following dates: March 15th & 16th (freshmen), March 20th & 21st (juniors), and April 5th & 6th (seniors.) The lessons will be taught by our social workers, psychologists, counselors, and wellness staff. Your child’s English teacher will also be present during this presentation. The presentations will discuss the following topics in 40 – 45 minute sessions:
Understanding sexual violence
Identifying healthy relationships
Consent vs. compliance
Finding resources for support.
We will encourage students that when they need to talk to someone about themselves or a friend, it is important to connect with a trusted adult. If a student is concerned about their own safety or the safety of someone they know, we instruct them to follow one of these steps:
Tell a trusted adult immediately. Trusted adults who are available at school are: Teachers, Coaches, School Counselors, School Nurses, School Administrators, a member of the Student Services Team (Social Worker, Psychologist, or Wellness Staff)
Access this LINK to connect to additional resources or to report concerns
Should your student be experiencing a mental health emergency, call 911
.
Together we can make sure our children have the right to be safe and know where to go if they are not. District 220 believes that all of our students will benefit from participating in these lessons. If you do not wish for your child to participate, please complete THIS FORM and send it back to the main office before their scheduled lesson date.
If you have any questions about Erin’s Law or the content of the lessons, please feel free to contact me at SMcWilliams@barrington220.org.
Yours truly,
Steve McWilliams

See Something, Say Something
Barrington 220 is now partnering with an Illinois school safety helpline aimed at providing students a place to report information that might prevent bullying, suicide, and campus violence. Safe2Help is available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It allows students to confidentially share school safety issues via a mobile app, text, email, or phone call. You will notice that the "See Something, Say Something" button on our district and school website now links directly to the Safe2Help contact page. We are asking that all students, parents, staff, and community members now use this platform to report safety concerns. In the case of an emergency, call 911.
