Third Grade
Resources for Block 2
Overview
Block 2 might feel a little dramatic because ..... it is. Third grade critical focus areas are huge with fractions, multi-digit addition and subtraction, and word problems. It's a big one.
"In Grade 3, instructional time should focus on four critical areas: (1) developing understanding of multiplication and division and strategies for multiplication and division within 100; (2) developing understanding of fractions, especially unit fractions (fractions with numerator 1); (3) developing understanding of the structure of rectangular arrays of area; and (4) describing and analyzing two-dimensional shapes."
Fractions
Great Resources
- Georgia Math Tasks for Unit 5 are all focused on the 3rd Grade Fractions.
- The Core Academy in Mathematics is a Utah-based wiki with teacher created math tasks for each area of the core.
- Inside Mathematics has a variety of lessons for fractions for 3rd grade.
- LearnZillion can break up your lessons with little videos. Be sure to check the additional materials and about this lesson tabs for helpful info, student work, and links to more.
Engage NY Lessons
Remember that you will add lessons from Engage NY to expand fraction concepts. The lessons are picked specifically to work on concepts and models not well covered in Expressions, such as number lines. There are 400 pages of fraction work in Module 5, if you are dying for more!
- Module 5 Engage NY Overview Page
- Lesson 8: Represent part of one whole as fractions with number bonds
- Lesson 16: Place whole number fractions and fractions between whole numbers on the number line
- Lesson 22: Generate simple equivalent fractions by using visual fraction models and the number line
More fractions from Engage NY are covered in Block 5, but can be added here depending on student need.
Measurement, Time, and Graphs
Great Resources
- Georgia Math Tasks for Unit 6 are all focused on the 3rd Grade Fractions.
- Get problems and performance tasks from Inside Mathematics on measurement and data.
- Illustrative Mathematics has content by Clusters. Here is Measurement and Data.
- Module 6 from Engage NY is all about data and graphing. Look for great line plot lessons like Lesson 6.
Real World Fractions
This Teaching Channel Video shows how to apply fractions to real life. Then get the lesson plan here.
Teaching Elapsed Time
This is how I teach elapsed time. Once learned, the same idea can help go forward, backward, or between times even across 12-hour spans. It works!
Graphing Colors
Watch a lesson on graphing with colors and then download the lesson plan and materials to do it in your room.
Bonus Fun Stuff
Math Games
Broken out by standard, many are more "problems" than "games" but can be great review and practice without creating your own problems.
Splash Math
Fun little videos and interactives for practice on skills. Try this one on weight and capacity.
Fun Games
ABCya might have other "just games" but their math tools are pretty handy. For Block 2, try the Fraction Fling and Measuring with a Ruler.
Place Value & Multiplication
Check out this video on number sense and multiplication. There are valuable models as 3rd graders work up to being 4th graders in multiplication.
StudyJams
Made by Scholastic and focused on Math and Science, Study Jams is a tween-site with valuable resources.
NLVM
The National Library of Virtual Manipulatives can bring in tools you don't have and provide worthwhile hands-on practice with online tools.
