What's Going On in the Library?
January 2017
Families Invited to Participate in Mock Caldecott
Each January, the American Library Association awards the Caldecott Medal to the artist of "the most distinguished American picture book for children." Who will win in 2017? Well, first- and second-graders are going to make their pick in library, and we'll see how our choice lines up with the national award.
We are reading and discussing about a dozen books. You can see the list on this LibGuide page, which includes links to book trailers and activity guides. I'm not sure exactly when we'll be voting in class, but next month's newsletter will include a link for families to cast their ballot from the finalists.
Expand Your Vocabulary
This site has several different subjects in addition to English vocabulary; every time you get an answer correct, 10 grains of rice are donated to the World Food Programme.
This site is set up as a giant competition between schools all over the country. If you click the link, it will take you the Oak Lawn Families page. You can set up an account and every word you get right will add points to our total.
What We're Covering This Month
I'm working on getting all of my lessons and resources online via the LibGuide platform. I also post photos of students and their work on our blog. In addition to Mock Caldecott for Grades 1 and 2, here's what we're currently learning about:
