Annual Out of the Darkness Suicide Prevention and Awareness Walk
Saturday, April 9. Registration will begin at 7:30 AM.
We have seen in the past couple of years the toll that this pandemic has taken on the mental health and well being of our country. The CDC reports: In May 2020, during the Covid-19 pandemic, Emergency Department visits for supspected suicide attempts began to increase among adolescents aged 12-17 years, especially girls. During February 21-March 20, 2021, suspected suicide attempt ED visits were 50.6% higher among girls aged 12-17 years than during the same period in 2019; among boys aged 12-17 years, supspected suicide attemps ED visits increased 3.7%. In the State of Pennsylvania, suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for ages 10-34 and the 11th leading cause of death in Pennsylvania.
We hope that as a community we can come together to help support our students and our community at large to help identify the signs and bring awareness to turn the tide on these staggering statistics. These are not statistics that we should be complacent with. You can help by making a donation and/or creating or joining a walk team. AFSP is dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide. AFSP creates a culture that’s smart about mental health by engaging in the following core strategies:
- Funding scientific research
- Educating the public about mental health and suicide prevention
- Advocating for public policies in mental health and suicide prevention
- Supporting survivors of suicide loss and those affected by suicide
