Book Fair
Kids will be reading this summer! We made our goal of 1,500 books, with a few extra to boot! That speaks volumes about our students’ love of reading!
This fair was a great learning experience for kids as they had to figure tax into their purchases. It was a challenge, but it’s the norm now so they will certainly get the hang of it with more practice!
On a very bright note, I am partnering with our wonderful PTSA to help provide books for the new book vending machine. All purchases that were rounded up went to All 4 Books. That money is then used to purchase books from our fair, which will go in the new book vending machine! Everyone was very generous and $200 was raised! Thank you! Plus, PTSA will receive my Scholastic Dollars for future online purchases as well!
Finally, if you didn’t get a chance to pick up that special book or there is money remaining on your child’s eWallet, there’s still time to purchase! Visit our online book fair through May 10 and explore more than 5,000 titles! All purchases benefit our school and will go meeting our goal of 1,500 books. Remember, all book orders $25 or more will ship free of charge to your home! Visit https://www.scholatic.com/bf/sfbobcats. Thank you for supporting our spring book fair! I’m already looking forward to our Fall Book Fair next October and seeing families again!
Weekly Message from the Founder of ALL THINGS EQ (Danna Evans):
The motto for this week is:
I seek solutions!
As parents, it’s tempting to want to solve our children’s problems for them, and we often do. However, it can be far more beneficial for our kids if we walk them through how to solve the problem rather than solve it for them because our long-term goal for them is independence rather than reliance on us.
George Polya is referred to as the father of problem-solving. He wrote the book How to Solve It – A system of thinking which can help you solve any problem. In his book, he breaks problem-solving down into four simple steps. These simple steps are helpful frames to share with your children.
- Understand the problem: Have your child explain their problem in their own words. Ask them if they think they have all the information or if there are any unanswered questions regarding the problem.
- Make a plan: Encourage your child to brainstorm various solutions that may help. Then discuss the pros and cons of each solution and have them pick one solution to try.
- Carry out the plan: This is the part where they take action and carry out their plan until complete. Encourage them to make a list of what needs to be done.
- Look back: Ask your child, “How is it going?” If the plan isn’t working, they can discard it and try one of the other plans they brainstormed. Remind them they can bring what they learned from working on the previous solution to their new plan.
“Running away from any problem only increases the distance from the solution. The easiest way to escape from the problem is to solve it.”
-Unknown
As our children grow up, they may encounter problems they do not share with us. Equipping them with the problem-solving process now may require more patience than just solving it ourselves. However, it pays off with more peace of mind later when we know our children have confidence in their problem-solving abilities.
