The J-Hawk Experience
Info you need to know for week of November 6-10!
Message from the principal
One area of focus for UHS has been building our partnership with students' parents and guardians. It has led us to take action to improve communication between happenings not only in classrooms, but also in and around the school and even beyond its walls.
Examples of this can be seen in —
This week our traditional Parent/Teacher Conferences offer families two opportunities to connect with teachers and school staff in a more face-to-face way. They will be held in the UHS Commons (lunchroom) on Monday, November 6th, and Thursday, November 9th, from 4:00pm-8:15pm.
These are drop-in conferences where teachers are available to visit in person. A list of teacher dinner times are listed here. Teachers will not be available during their 30 minute dinner times. The following link shares when coaches and directors will be out for conferences.
We welcome all family members and students to come be a part of these opportunities for connecting and improving our partnership aimed at helping improve students' overall experience. Together we can achieve our vision: UHS will change the world!
Examples of this can be seen in —
- increased email communication from teachers around student learning
- individual communication through emails or calls to individuals around positive things happening with students
- a pilot project where individual teachers are inviting in parents to be partners in discussing issues related to students' lives from a larger perspective
- increased awareness of what's happening in and around UHS through publication of this newsletter — "The J-Hawk Experience" — that goes out to UHS parents and guardians, staff and students each week.

Student clubs taking action to help those in need around the community!
On Saturday, UHS student clubs helped to change the world in lives of people in need around our community. In the morning, the UHS Key Club, with teacher sponsor Melissa Gyure, once again helped rake leaves and do yard clean up for residents in need in Urbandale as part of the UCAN Fall Clean Up event. Key Club had 23 members there to help along with four members of the UHS ECO club. Great job!
Saturday morning also saw UHS's new club, Hope in Action, hosting an event at UHS called Boxes for Babies, when expecting mothers came to get supplies needed to help end SIDS in our society. Later that afternoon, Hope in Action members then went down to place two new little free libraries in the Homes of Oakridge neighborhood, to increase access to reading for all. Special thanks to Mr. Parrott for sponsoring Hope in Action as well as Mrs. Wilson for connecting HIA to Boxes for Babies. Awesome work!

Learning around UHS
UHS AP United States History students morning prep
Mrs. Hale's AP US History students took some extra time beyond class to meet on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, mornings this past week to review their learning and understanding of Presidents Washington through Van Buren, looking at their time in office and changes in our country during that time. Around 25 students met each morning to reconnect their learning and prepare for their upcoming assessment.
