Halloween Safety:
Halloween can be safe and fun! Make sure your child has visibility with their costumes. Fun neon stickers, flashlights or glows sticks are examples of ways to be creative and safe at the same time. Parents should check their child’s candy for evidence of tampering before eating their treats. Food allergies can be a challenge with celebrations. Check out this Halloween safety guide for food allergies https://community.kidswithfoodallergies.org/blog/2018-allergy-friendly-halloween-candy-guide
Prevention is the Best Medicine: Good handwashing and covering your cough and sneeze are best practices to prevent the spread of illness especially the Flu!
It’s time to start thinking about getting your Flu Shot for this Flu season! The CDC recommends Flu Vaccine for all individuals 6 months and older. Check out the CDC website for more information regarding the Flu and the Flu vaccine at https://www.cdc.gov/flu/pdf/freeresources/updated/fluguideforparents.pd

Drug Abuse Prevention: October 27, 2018 is National Drug Take Back Day. Find a location close by to return medications not being used in your household and keep your families safe. .https://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/drug_disposal/takeback/
Vision and Hearing Screening update: October has been vision and hearing screening month at Blue Ash Elementary. All Kindergarten, First Grade, Third Grade and New Students to the district were screened for their vision and hearing. Parents sometimes ask why is it important to have your child’s vision and hearing screened. Vision and hearing is important for speech, language development, reading and learning. Even if your child has passed previous screenings, their vision and hearing may change without them noticing a difference. If your child passes the vision and hearing screening here at school, you will not be contacted by the school nurse. Parents are encouraged to contact the school nurse if you have questions regarding your child’s vision and hearing. A vision and hearing screening provides only a snapshot of how your child performs on the day the screening was administered and is not a substitute for a complete exam by an optometrist, ophthalmologist or audiologist. If your child does not meet the Ohio Department of Health school screening guidelines with the initial screening, a repeat screening is done. If the your child’s second screening still does not meet the Ohio Department Health school screening guidelines, the parent or guardian is informed of screening results by the school nurse with recommendations. Please contact our School Nurse, Mrs. Wyrick, RN at 513-686-1713 or wyrickd@sycamoreschools.org if you have any questions.
October is Anti-Bullying Month
It is not enough to just be aware. We are all charged with doing all we can to prevent and stop bullying in our schools and our communities. And October is not the only time that these reminders are important. The prevention of bullying is a focus for our school all year long.
Every day we focus on our "Four Be's at BAE" - Be Safe, Be Respectful, Be Responsible and Be a Problem Solver. We learn how important kindness, empathy and inclusion are; and we practice everyday. We learn how to recognize bullying behaviors and how to problem solve to make our school a safe and supportive place for all of our classmates.
Parents, please remember to ask your children frequently about their day. Have them share their experiences with you so that in the event that they are having difficulty with friendships, we can all work together to support them.
Below is a link that you can access for more information about what parents can do to help prevent bullying.

Thank you for partnering with us to create a school and community where everyone feels safe, welcome and supported.
Reporting Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying Incidences
In an ongoing effort to provide a safe learning environment, Sycamore is requesting parents, students, and staff to inform administration (or whoever) of any perceived incidences of harassment, intimidation, or bullying.
Per the Sycamore Board of Education policy JFCF, harassment, intimidation, and bullying are defined as any provoked and intentional written, verbal, electronic or physical act that a student has exhibited toward another particular student more than once and the behavior both:
causes mental or physical harm to the other student; and
is sufficiently severe, persistent, or pervasive that it creates an intimidating, threatening, or abusive educational environment for the other student.
To view the complete policy, visit www.sycamoreschools.org, under the Board of Education tab, scroll down to “Policies”, search for policy “JFCF”.
Sycamore will do everything possible to address any complaints of harassment, intimidation, and bullying. We encourage students, staff, parents, and community members to report this type of behavior to the district if help is needed to solve a problem.
To report an incident of harassment, intimidation, and bullying,
Go to the website, www.sycamoreschools.org under Academics, General Education, Parent Resources, Anti-Bullying
Scroll down until you see the Harassment, Intimidation, and Bullying Incident Reporting Form for the individual schools.
Fill the form on-line and submit it electronically.
Hard copies of this form are available in each of the schools.
Complete the hard copy of the report form and turn it into the building principal.
The building principal or designee will promptly investigate all reported incidences.
It is difficult to investigate reported incidences that are anonymously submitted. However, every effort will be made to maintain the confidentiality of the reporter. Deliberate false reporting of harassment, intimidation, and bullying is prohibited.
