Message From Mrs. Kilday
I hope everyone stayed nice and warm during the artic blast we just had. I am so glad we are more back to more normal temperatures now!
We have two very exciting things happening in our school right now that very much reflect our values at the Rodman.
First, I am sure you have noticed the map and hearts that have gone up in the hallway. The hearts are from all of you and share what you find most special and important about your background and culture. I find these fascinating to read and am learning so much about our Rodman families. If you have not sent your heart back yet, please do. We want everyone to be present on our board. This week we will begin the next phase of the project. Each family will have a small circle to place on the country that most reflects their background and culture. I cannot wait to see the diversity reflected on this map.
Second, we have started our pom pom kindness campaign! Each classroom has a bucket and when kindness is observed we add a pom pom. Once the bucket is full, the class will bring it to the hall and empty it in our big container. The hall container is large! I have high expectations for our friends. Please feel free to do this at home as well and add your pompoms to the bucket!
These activities make my heart so happy. They truly reflect our values of kindness, acceptance, respect and inclusion.
Have a great night everyone.
Donna

Curriculum Corner
One way we celebrate Black History Month is by reading stories representing black and brown characters. We do this throughout the year, but pay extra special attention to it this month.
Here is a list of our favorites:
Mae Among The Stars by Roda Ahmed
Peter's Chair by Ezra Jack Keats
Goggles by Ezra Jack Keats
A Letter for Amy by Ezra Jack Keats ( he is a wonderful author)
Parker Looks Up by Parker Curry
Hair Love by Matthew Cherry
Curls by Ruth Forman
Full, Full, Full of Love by Trish Cooke
Jabari Jumps by Gaia Cornwall
My Nana and Me by Irene Smalls
I will share more books every week this month. Many of these are either in our classroom libraries or our lending library so please check them out.
Lottery Applications
All applications are due by February 27th .If your child is on an IEP you do not need to fill out an application. Your child's placement is determined by the team when considering their needs and the least restrictive environment.
Valentines
Valentine's Day Homework!
As Valentine’s Day approaches we continue to talk about friendship. In lieu of individual valentines, children can make one valentine for the class. Your child can create it at home on construction paper by using materials such as stickers, doilies, paper, crayons, stamps, etc. (no candy or food, please). These valentines will then be displayed in our classroom. We have found that the children enjoy sharing their creations. We ask that they arrive at school on or before February 14th.
Please do not send individual valentines for classmates. These valentines will be in lieu of this.
Rodman Family Map Project
During the month of February, we are going to be talking about love, respect, inclusion, and kindness. As a kickoff to this, we would love to learn more about our families, so we are sending home a heart for you to answer the following question: What is special about your culture? (i.e. music, clothing, food). Please return the heart to your child’s classroom teacher by Monday, January 30th.
Our display is up in the main hallway so stop and take a look! It is a wonderful sight to see.
