Superintendent Update

Dear Parents & Guardians:

All is going well in the halls and classrooms of our schools. Our students and staff enjoyed a successful Homecoming & Spirit week culminating with a big win for our Varsity Football Team! I am always impressed with the creative ways we bring school spirit and camaraderie into our buildings.

As I'm sure you are aware there is a lot of discussion about our upcoming referendum. We are trying our best to ensure all of our residents are fully informed about the November 8th referendum vote. We've completed 3 informational sessions thus far with one more to go on Tuesday, October 25. Each of these sessions has reached 20-25 residents per night and we always allow ample time for questions.

To make it even easier, we have created quick and easy to watch videos on YouTube that can be accessed on the links below. If you have neighbors, friends, or family members that are not parents in the district, feel free to show them these videos. All of these links are available on our website and have been posted on our facebook page as well.

Big picture

Professional Development

There will be no school for students on Monday, October 24 to allow the district to provide ongoing professional development for our educators. In the past, the school utilized the small amount of time during early release on Wednesday afternoons for professional development and meetings. To allow for more productive professional development opportunities that can be connected for the entire district JK-12, the board approved a calendar with full release days.

Here is a list of the remaining days off for students due to staff inservice:

  • Monday, January 23
  • Monday, February 20
  • Monday, April 10

Footloose!

The Howards Grove High School drama department proudly presents the timeless musical, “Footloose”! You will be tapping your toes to many classic songs from the 80’s including “Almost Paradise”, “Let Hear It For the Boy”, “Holding Out for a Hero” and “Everybody Cut Footloose”. The cast of 32 students are excited to share this performance with you! Please note that this production has adult themes and mild language. Reserved tickets are $10 and can be purchased online TODAY at https://www.showtix4u.com/event-details/68116

Hope to see you there!

Looking Ahead

The School Board approved the 2023-2024 calendar at the October 18th meeting. Please note, due to September 1st being a Friday, we will start school for students on Tuesday, September 5.

Fraud Alert

The School District of Howards Grove was recently the victim of a fraudulent impersonation cyber scheme. The incident involved a $24,100 payment intended for UW-Oshkosh for student participation in their Cooperative Academic Partnership but was misdirected to an imposter posing as a UW-Oshkosh employee. The matter was referred to law enforcement.

The District has insurance coverage to protect against cyber attacks such as fraudulent impersonation. The District will continue to be vigilant in bringing awareness to all employees in regards to cyber threats.

Mark your calendar!

The next school board meeting is scheduled for Monday, November 21 at 6:00 PM in the high school library.

In person visitors are welcome, but we also have a virtual link each month.

Please Be Safe!

The safety of our students, staff, and families is a top priority. Each day students are dropped off and picked up at each school by caregivers. Students exit cars and navigate their way to the buildings and often times may not be paying attention. Please help us keep everyone safe by monitoring your speed, staying off your mobile device, and patiently waiting your turn in the drop off lines.

Thank you!

Communication Chain

As questions or concerns arise, please continue to follow this communication chain.

FIRST, Reach out directly to your child's teacher/team/coach.

In the event your concerns are not addressed or you need further support, NEXT reach out to the building principal or activities director.

Jon Hess- High School Principal: jhess@hgsd.k12.wi.us

Angie Houston- Middle School Principal: ahouston@hgsd.k12.wi.us

Sarah Ellinger- Northview Principal: sellinger@hgsd.k12.wi.us

Tracy Mueller- Athletic/Activities Director & Special Education Director: tmueller@hgsd.k12.wi.us

FINALLY, if you still need additional support, please reach out directly to me, Shannon Kilton, Superintendent: skilton@hgsd.k12.wi.us

In the event, we have all failed to help you navigate your questions & concerns, your last stop would be to reach out to the school board. Here is the actual board policy on navigating this process.

I am personally asking for this communication chain to help us all develop positive and trusting relationships, which are always grounded in open and honest conversations. Most often, concerns can be easily solved when we all talk directly to the person involved with the question or problem.

Thanks in advance for the support and understanding of this process.
