Interview with a Spelling Bee Champion
Congratulations to Darcy Glore for winning the Del Norte Unified School District Spelling Bee 6 years in a row. Mrs. Fearing sat down with Darcy for this interview about her accomplishments .
What grade are you in? 8th
How many years have you participated in the spelling bee? 6 years
Why did you start participating in the spelling bee? In 3rd grade my teacher sent out a test for the spelling bee and I scored the highest in my class and I won the spelling bee, so I thought I should do this every year. I won every year and by 5th grade they just started letting me go to the spelling bee each year.
What do you like about the spelling bee? I like the competition aspect of it. I like how it’s a competition but not a sports competition. It's something anyone can do as long as they study.
How much do you study? As soon as I get the lists, about a month before. I read over the lists and select words I don’t know and put them into a smaller list. I read over the list and mouth the words as I am spelling them as I practice. As it gets closer I have people quiz me on the words.
What advice do you have for other kids who want to participate in the spelling bee? I would tell them to study the way I do. I don’t know how easy it is for other kids, but my study pattern is pretty good.
What is it like at the state spelling bee? It is basically like a bigger version of the county spelling bee, but there is free food at the beginning.
Is there anything else you want to add? I hope I win the state spelling bee this year. Last year I placed 10th out of about 50 students.
