Making the Move to Canvas

Weekly Geekly Special Edition

Saying Goodbye to The Learning Hub

As of June 2019, FISD will no longer be using The Learning Hub (Moodle) as our learning management system. We're moving to Canvas! Please note that after the first week of June, you will no longer have access to The Learning Hub, your courses, or the content you have stored there for staff and students. This leads up to a big task. We have to move all of the Learning Hub courses and content that we want to keep to Canvas. Please look through the topics below to see what is relevant to you. All courses will need some type of action to take place by May 8th so look through this carefully. Thank you!

Learning Hub: studentlearninghub.friscoisd.org

FISD Canvas: fisd.instructure.com

REGARDLESS OF YOUR CHOICE BELOW, YOU WILL HAVE ACCESS TO YOUR LEARNING HUB COURSE THROUGH THE JUNE 1ST.

OPTION 1: What if I don't want or need anything in the Learning Hub Course for which I am the teacher?

Your task is easy. Please add the word DELETE to the end of your course title. For example, "My Favorite Course - DELETE".

Steps to take to change the course title:

  1. Go into your course.
  2. Click "Edit Settings" in the Course administration block.
  3. Add DELETE at the end of your Course name.
  4. Click the Save and display button.

And you are done! We will delete this course when the Learning Hub goes away.

Big picture

Option 2: I want to move my Learning Hub content to Canvas by myself. How do I do that?

If you want to move your content from the Learning Hub to Canvas by yourself please use this document to help guide you.

If you prefer, you can watch this short video which will also walk you through this process.

Once you have moved your content, please add the word MOVED to the end of your course name. For example, "My Favorite Course - MOVED."

Steps to take to change the course title:

  1. Go into your Learning Hub course.
  2. Click "Edit settings" in the Course administrative block.
  3. Add MOVED at the end of your course name.
  4. Click the Save and display button.

And you're done! Thank you for taking care of the move on your own. Your content will now be in Canvas ready for you to use. You will likely need to rearrange the content that you imported. Click on Home or Modules (depending on your setup) to organize your imported content.

If you are a co-teacher of the Learning Hub course, you will want to enroll the other teachers/managers into the Canvas course so they can help you rearrange content. You can enroll people by following these instructions.

Option 3: I want to move my Learning Hub Content to Canvas but I need someone to help me do it.

Email Kim Hampton at hamptonk@friscoisd.org with the names of every class you need moved and the date you want that content to be moved over.

HOW AM I GOING TO GET TRAINING ON CANVAS?

We have some options for you!

1- Schedule some time to meet with Kim one on one-as many times as you need!

2- Technology has created a self-paced course in Canvas called Frisco ISD - Introduction to Canvas. This is a really good introduction but is lengthy. If you are interested in enrolling in this course, please use this link - https://fisd.instructure.com/enroll/HKC9PM

3- LTHS will be offering a Canvas Rock Star course this summer and next year. This is still being built, but it contains a few elements that are mandatory (that have to do with getting your courses ready to use for the year) followed by a menu of options that you can learn more about. These are served up in bite sized pieces to let you practice small tasks as you get to know Canvas.

4-This summer we are scheduling 3 hour sessions of face to face training. Those dates and times are listed here, please register in Eduphoria Workshop if you are wanting to attend. If these courses fill up, we will schedule more. These should be available MAY 1.
