Parents/Guardians
October Updates:
Thank you to everyone that made it out last night for Parent Teacher Conferences. If you were unable to make it please check out the parent portal and look at your student's grades. If you have any questions email the teacher so we can make sure to answer any questions you may have. For those new to FHS, grades are cumulative throughout the semester. Grades are not final until after the 1st semester is over in December. As we complete the end of our fall sports season I want to congratulate the band on earning the distinction of Grand Champion at the Southern Boone competition. Winter practices start on Monday and students MUST have a physical in order to participate/try-out. On another positive note out Freshman Academic ICU program is proving to be beneficial. We reduced the percentage of F's students received from last year to this year by over 2%. We will continue to pilot the program throughout the year and make decisions in the Spring regarding the use of it next year.
We do have several areas we want to make you aware of as well. We are seeing an increase in the number of students being sent to the office for being on their phones in class. We know that with this generation the cell phone is their lifeline. We also know that parents have become increasingly dependant on being able to reach their student throughout the day. If you need to contact your student please don't call them during the day. If it is an emergency call the office and we will make sure to get the message to them. We have had several situations this year when phones have gone off in class and it was a parent calling to talk to the student about a non-emergency situation. The second issue and more importantly is the increase in students bringing/using electronic cigarettes (especially the brand JUUL) in the school or classroom. The JUUL appears to be the brand of choice as it provides very little vapor during the exhale and it does not produce very much of an odor. It is very hard to detect unless someone sees a student doing it. When asked the students tell me they prefer the JUUL because of its' taste as well as the fact that it is significantly stronger than a cigarette or other brands of electronic cigarettes. The students state they get a short-term high due to the amount of nicotine in the JUUL. They look like small narrow thumb drives and can even be charged using the USB port on your computer. We will continue to assign consequences related to these devices just as we have done for other nicotine related products over the years.
The 1st quarter went by extremely quickly, and 2nd quarter tends to move even faster with the Thanksgiving break and impending finals. Please keep your emails and phone numbers up to date in our system so we can continue to communicate school-related items to you.
We appreciate your continued support and remember if you need anything please contact us.
Thanks,
Chris
