Chugga Chugga Choo Choo
Chugging along....
Donorschoose materials going strong
Bag #1
There were 8 bags of legos within the train box. Each day, a group of students work together to construct their bag.
Bag #2
We have hit some snafus along the way (like missing pieces, and no batteries-oops! but we overcome)
Bag #3
The train is really awesome! When they get all of the pieces constructed, then they can connect tracks to let her roll!

Monster Glyph
We had fun creating monster glyphs by answering questions. Each monster is individual to each child's responses. The best part is evaluating the data. As a group, we practice counting, adding, comparing. Common core math objectives include:
- using addition and subtraction to solve word problems
- solving word problems that call for addition of 3 whole numbers
- relating counting to addition and subtraction
- adding and subtracting within 20 demonstration fluency
- greater than/less than
Big Learner/Little Learner
Big Learner/little learner is an opportunity for older students to come and work with younger students.
Our learners enjoyed practicing math skills with math games.
Board games are a great way to integrate math and reading skills, along with social skills and turn-taking!
Raptor Center
Barn owl (aka...ghost owl, heart-faced owl)
We saw 3 different kinds of owls; screech owl, barn owl, and great horned owl
vulture
We saw a vulture and a golden eagle.
red-tailed hawk
We say a red-tailed hawk and a falcon.
Morning calendar
Our calendar time is rich in math objectives. This gives us daily practice as a whole group and individually with numbers. In addition to the number line (that we add to each day) and the 120s chart (that we identify how many days), we use other visual and resources to practice math skills. Objectives covered include:
- use addition and subtraction with 20 to solve word problems
- solving word problems that call for addition of 3 whole numbers
- apply properties of operations
- understand subtraction is an unknown addend problem
- relate counting to addition and subtraction
- fact fluency
- tens and ones
- greater than/less than
- one more/one less, ten more/ten less
- organize and represent, and interpret data
I have included pictures below as examples
Venn Diagram
This is one way that we have used to collect data.
Evaluating the data (from the venn)
Tally totals
Write is complete sentences
Communative property of addition/using 3 numbers to add
Transfer to graph
Tens frames
We use a different sticker for the days of each month. We can count how many days we were in school in Aug, Sept, Oct., add together, or answer how many more.
Collecting and graphing data
- Make equations
- odd or even
- greater than/less thank
Straw chart
This is another way to represent tens and ones.
One more/one less, Ten more/Ten less
This is a visual to help students with mental math. They use their their 120s chart if they need it.
Shared Reading
For shared reading, we have introduced nouns and verbs. We have also practiced increasing our stamina with text. This gives me opportunity to listen to students read individually.
Vicky Verb
We added action words to this anchor chart.
A noun is...
We added nouns to this anchor chart.
Read to Self
We have made it to 13 minutes. Our goal is 3 consecutive days at 10 minutes or higher.
