A Special Surprise!

From BGHS Athletic Director, Matt English . . .

"Dylan Allen, a junior starter on the BG varsity team, has an uncle who has been deployed in Afghanistan for the last year. Dylan's uncle, Kyle English, returned home from Afghanistan late Tuesday night and wanted to see Dylan's basketball game. With the help of Dylan's mother, and the Cardinal Ritter community, we were able to set up a surprise meeting between Dylan and Kyle just before the varsity game on February 10.

The link below contains the story and video....it really is pretty awesome! Thanks to Cardinal Ritter and their athletic director, Jim Martin, for their willingness to make the event happen."

FYI: BG won the varsity contest by a score of 78-59; Dylan contributed 15 points for the Hornets!

Champions Together Game is a Great Success!

From Athletic Director, Mr. Matt English . . .

"A big shout out to Garret Daniel, Quinten Starks and Gabrielle Fangman. These three, along with the BGHS Student Leadership Committee, were the driving force behind the Champions Together event that took place last Saturday afternoon in between the JV and varsity boys' basketball games. The program involved students of varying abilities and it was a great success. The involvement of the BGHS and Rushville basketball teams was tremendous and our student leaders displayed great enthusiasm for the event. The excitement and enjoyment shown by the students involved in the game is impossible to describe here, but it really was awesome to witness in person!

Great job to Garret, Quin, Gabrielle, the Student Leadership Committee and all the students involved...it was a great display of what BGCS is all about!"

From South Grove's Mrs. Stacy Johnson . . .

"South Grove Buzz Club students enjoyed a special activity last week designing and painting a special Valentine piece of art for their special someone. Mrs. Norton, an artist 'on the side,' took our students through the steps of painting on canvas. Everyone did such a GREAT job and had fun, too! "

Photos from the event are pictured below.

BGMS' Robotics Team

From Coach Dennis Lawton . . .

"The robotics team competed in their final meet of the season on Saturday, February 13. The competition included 61 teams. During the qualification rounds, Beech Grove earned a spot in the finals. This was the first finals appearance this season. During the final round the Hornets were able to place third overall in the teamwork competition. This was the best finish of the season. Great job and great end to a successful season!"

Idiom Day at South Grove Intermediate

From Mrs. Mann . . .

"On Friday, February 12, the 4th grade classes celebrated Idiom Day. This was a culminating activity to celebrate our study of figurative language. The students had to dress up or bring props to represent a common idiom." The idioms represented from Mrs. Mitchell's homeroom are:

piece of cake

for the birds

let the cat out of the bag

heart on my sleeve

space cadet

lend me a hand

breaking news

And, idioms represented in Mrs. Mann's homeroom:

hit the books

I've got your back

penny for your thoughts

catch some z's

human calculator

costs an arm and a leg

I'm not made of money

Idiom Definition. The term refers to a set expression or a phrase comprising two or more words. An interesting fact regarding the device is that the expression is not interpreted literally. The phrase is understood as to mean something quite different from what individual words of the phrase would imply.

(First set of photos is from Mrs. Mitchell's homeroom; the second set is from Mrs. Mann's homeroom.)

Well done, students!!

Send Us Your Hornet Highlights!

We know there are many, many positive stories about Beech Grove City Schools involving our students, teachers, staff, and programs that we don't always hear. If you have a positive story to share, please send the details to Melody Stevens, Community Relations Director, at mstevens@bgcs.k12.in.us. We also encourage you to send stories that include personal achievements of your child such as: attaining the rank of Eagle Scout, performing in a community play, earning Girl Scout badges, serving as a volunteer in a non-profit organization, etc., etc. You might just see your story in a future edition of the "Hornet Blast" or in one of our local south side newspapers. We want to celebrate our Hornets!
