The Endocrine System

The endocrine system is the collection of glands that produce hormones that regulate metabolism, growth and development, tissue function, sexual function, reproduction, sleep, and mood, among other things.

Chemical Imbalance

Chemical imbalances- One hypothesis about the cause of mental illness. Other causes that are debated include psychological and social causes.


Hormones- Chemical messengers that are secreted directly into the blood, which carries them to organs and tissues of the body to exert their functions. There are many types of hormones that act on different aspects of bodily functions and processes. Some of these include: Development and growth.


Testes- The male gonad or reproductive gland, either of two oval glands located in the scrotum

Ovaries- A female reproductive organ in which ova or eggs are produced, present in humans and vertebrates as a pair.
