Important Updates to Schedule, Senior Procession and Underclassmen Pictures!

Asynchronous Day on Thursday, September 24th!

Parents, I hope that you will all be checking in with your students today and asking them about their interim reports. We know this transition to online learning has not been the easiest for everyone. Receiving interim reports today might cause some students anxiety and stress related to the grades they are seeing and the missing assignments they are accruing. Our teachers are feeling that same kind of stress and anxiety.

I therefore am adding an asynchronous learning day into our schedule for next Thursday, September 24th. This will be a day where there will be no "live instruction". Teachers will spend this next week determining what each of their classes need and will give time next Thursday for remediation, reteaching of concepts, a make-up day for missing assignments, etc. There will be no new content taught on this day.

We are also half-way through this first quarter and the teachers need an additional day to continue planning for the remainder of this quarter. Overall, we have had a successful start to the start of virtual learning, we want to make sure that this success is sustained and continued.

The Senior Procession on Friday is postponed until Thursday, September 24th!

After closely monitoring the weather forecast, it is becoming apparent that this Friday morning is just not conducive to having a successful and fun Senior procession for our Class of 2021. Also, we realized that with this later start time, it is super dark at 7 am. So, for these reasons, which are primarily the safety of our students, we have decided to move the Senior Procession to the following Thursday, September 24th.

Since the 24th is now an Asynchronous learning day, it will also allow for the procession to happen during the lunch hour from noon - 1:30 pm when it will be light out. Senior cars will line up in the staff parking lot, turn right onto Laura Duncan, turn right into the bus loop entrance and proceed to follow the same route around the bus loop down to the 1st level of the parking deck around and back up and exit right onto Laura Duncan. Seniors will still be given their Senior t-shirts and now they will get lunch instead of breakfast. Plus, they don't have to get up at the crack of dawn to decorate their cars. I think it will be a Win-Win for everyone!

Here is a new RSVP form from the PTSA Senior Planning Committee. Please help to spread the word!

PEAK News for Week of September 14, 2020!

Cougar Families,

This is officially Interim week! Yes, I know it's hard to believe. This is what you need to know. All students will be completing their interim report this quarter during Cougar Class on Wednesday. Each student will be accessing PowerSchool to record their grades and missing/incomplete assignments for each class on their own personalized Google Doc. This document will be shared with the teacher. You are highly encouraged to ask your child for access to this document as well. You can also always check PowerSchool yourself. We are asking all Apex High teachers to have their grades updated by Tuesday at midnight.

Have I mentioned that we are REALLY appreciating all of the snacks you are sending our way through Amazon? Priceless!!!!

Virtual Club Fair

At Apex we believe it's important to join clubs to establish a connection to our school community. Clubs offer the opportunity to find peers with similar passions working toward a common goal. Our club presidents are committed to continuing their meetings in a virtual format, so that all can participate. On September 25th, we will be launching a virtual club fair on the Apex High School website that will allow students to take a 'PEAK' into various clubs to see which clubs align with their interests. We encourage all students to check out the club fair to find out how they can get involved.

Frequently Asked Questions!

FAQ's from previous newsletter:

  • What does "Live Instruction" mean? Defining “Live” Instruction (Synchronous) As a district, we have established a baseline for “live” instruction within the student’s experience (2-3 hours per day in Virtual Academy and when engaged in Plan B - Transition. In general, instruction is considered “live” if it (1) allows for the teacher and students to interact with each other in real time, and (2) is focused on furthering a learning goal.
  • What are examples of “Live” Instruction? This is by no means an exhaustive list!

    • Scheduled Collaborative Activities using digital tools

    • Peer feedback and collaboration activities where the teacher is also involved and providing feedback (example: using the comment feature in Google Docs to provide feedback).

    • Discussion Questions / Forums moderated by the teacher

    • Brief mini lessons through Google Meet to introduce a module of learning.

    • Google Meet Chats (Whole Class or Small Group)

  • Who do I submit my vaccination documentation to? Please submit all paperwork to our Registrar, Cathy Howard at choward@wcpss.net
  • Parking Passes? WCPSS has made the decision to not charge for parking passes this year as long as we are either in Plan B, Plan B Transition, or Plan C. If we move back to Plan A, students will be charged a prorated amount for the remainder of the year. Due to the possibility that we can come back this year, we are going to only be able to provide Juniors and Seniors with parking passes.

**We are not going to distribute parking passes at this time. We will let you know when this will take place after we have started the school year.

  • Who is the AHS Virtual Academy Coordinator? Assistant Principal Alicia Stevenson contact: agstevenson@wcpss.net
