5B Newsletter

October 23-October 27

I hope all of you had a wonderful weekend. I know many of you were still having Diwali Celebrations this weekend according to the students. Many shared their own celebrations with the class, and we really enjoyed hearing them. Friday is the end of the first quarter if you can believe it. Report cards come home the following week.

In reading this week we will be reading about Evelyn Cisneros from our Harcourt book. We have started a new read aloud called Al Capone Does My Shirts by Gennifer Choldenko, and the students are really liking the book so far. The historical fiction genre is one we haven't visited yet this year, and I am glad to see so many are interested in this genre.

In fifth grade math, students are continuing to work on double digit multiplication. We will look at word problems this week where students will use the standard algorithm to solve the problems. There will be a short quiz on Friday.

In accelerated math, they are continuing to work on proportions, ratios, rates and percents. They will begin their review of Unit 2 on Friday.

In spelling, we will again have another week where we are looking at Greek and Latin roots. For this test we are really looking at if the students can identify the meaning of the words based on the root.

In writing we are going to be wrapping up our newspaper article and our memoir. I am hoping to also get in a fun Halloween themed writing activity. Students have done a great job with their newspaper articles and collaborated well with their group members. Their memoirs are turning out great as well, and these also I will share at conferences.

In science, we are looking at plant and animal cells. We just finished a model of a plant cell. We will be looking at an onion cell under the microscope this week as well. I do not think we will have time to test this week so expect a test on cells early next week.

If you haven't signed up for parent teacher conference yet please do so. You should have received an email with your access code. If you have not you will need to contact the office. Thank you and have a great week!
