Elementary Update
I hope everyone is enjoying the summer! Since school has been out the elementary school has been a busy place. In the last few weeks the cafeteria has been painted and the gym floors have been waxed and relined - both look amazing! Students in grades 3-5 will come back to new desks which will complete the 2-year plan of updating all desks at OVES. As the summer continues the stage and gym bleachers will be stained and varnished. All classrooms are being cleaned and floors will be waxed. Stay tuned for some exciting news about the playgrounds!
Starting in the 2018-2019 school year the drop-off time in the morning for bus and parent drop-off students will be changing to 8:30 a.m. - 8:40 a.m. Students will still be marked late if they arrive after 8:45 a.m.
Elementary students wrapped up the 2017-2018 school year on a positive note by earning over 22,000 PAWS cards as a building. Students worked hard throughout the year by showing the traits of PAWS, which are Pride in Our School, Act Responsibly, Work Hard, and Show Respect. Some of the incentives earned by students included hat days, sit with a friend at lunch, music Fridays, and principals serving lunch. Additionally, for every 10 PAWS card a student earned they had their names entered for weekly drawings. Thank you to our local businesses that donated prizes for our PAWS program.

S.T.E.M. and 1:1 Expansion
For the past two years, S.T.E.M. (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) has been an introductory trimester course provided for eighth graders only. Beginning in 2018-2019, the Middle School will offer S.T.E.M. courses to all three grade levels. Sixth graders will have a quarter-long S.T.E.M. course of Design and Modeling. Seventh graders will have a trimester of Automation and Robotics. Eighth grade students will take a trimester of Flight and Space. All courses are aligned to Project Lead the Way and will be taught by Mr. Dave Daniels. We welcome Mr. Daniels, who will be coming to the Middle School this year from the Elementary School. These courses provide Oley Valley students with a comprehensive S.T.E.M. program K-12.
Last year, for the first time, eighth grade students were able to take their computers home throughout the school year (just as the high school students have been doing for years). This 1:1 initiative worked well and students had 24/7 access to internet resources. That initiative is widening and will include seventh grade students for 2018-19. This initiative requires a certain level of responsibility from students (and parents) but presents a terrific opportunity for students.
A Middle School newsletter will be coming out in the near future. It will include a list of dates for upcoming District and Middle School events. We are looking forward to an exciting school year that is just around the corner. In the meantime, enjoy the summer sun!

Career Symposium Offers Opportunity for Gifted Students
A career symposium, organized by Oley Valley High School's Gifted Support Teacher, Ms. Elsa Gundrum, was held on the morning of Friday, April 27, 2018, for students in the high school gifted program and additional students interested in pursuing careers related to those career areas being presented at the symposium. Students were able to hear firsthand as to how education paves the way to a good career. In attendance that morning were eight highly educated and amazing professionals from the following career fields: engineering, physical therapy, Cloud software technology, DNA analysis, United Airlines international pilot, graphic design and physics. These Berks County-area professionals provided the students with a career roadmap of what it takes to enter these specific career areas along with what skills and employment characteristics are needed to advance in these areas. Students rotated, in small groups, through several career circuits every 20 minutes. Students were able to ask questions and interact with the career speakers. The Career Symposium was a very successful and enjoyable event for everyone in attendance.
OVHS Students Receive Arts Recognition
The annual Berks County High School art exhibit took place this spring at the Goggleworks in Reading.
Award winners from Oley Valley are:
- Courtney Triest - 2nd Place in Color Photography
- Zach Good - 1st place honors for wheel thrown pottery and a Berks Craft Guild cash award of $100 for best traditional work.
- Kylee Hetrick - 2nd place award for wheel thrown pottery as well as a $100 cash award from the Berks Guild for excellence in crafts.
OVHS Students Participate in Summer Arts Opportunity
Goggleworks Student Ambassador Fellowship is an invitational summer program offered to six area high school students who are interested in pursuing higher education and/or professional careers in the visual arts. Mrs. Tomel and Mr. Dietrich nominated several students from our high school for the program this summer. After a series of interviews and review of artwork with program staff at the Goggleworks, Madysin Evans, Krystal Arroyo, and Mackenzie Sheidy were awarded three of the six positions.
For 10 weeks this summer, Fellows will be paired with a mentor from among the professional artist-instructors working at GoggleWorks. With mentor guidance - including studio instruction, project guidance, and material research, each Fellow will develop their artistic skills and working knowledge of processes and materials within the medium of their choice. At no cost to the students, the fellowship provides 20 hours of 1:1 mentorship with a professional artist, shared studio space and access to communal studios focusing on ceramics, hot glass, metalsmithing, photography, printmaking, drawing, and painting. Students are also offered one free summer course or workshop and participate in group and individual critiques. The experience culminates in a gallery exhibition and reception at the end of the summer.
Congratulations Madysin, Krystal, and Mackenzie!
Technology Student Association Finds Success at State Competition
From April 18-21, students from Oley Valley High School attended the Technology Student Association (TSA) State Conference which was held at Seven Springs Ski Resort in Southwestern Pennsylvania. During the conference members of the OVHS TSA club participated in activities and competed against their peers on the state level.
Oley Valley High School qualified their first students ever for the national competition which was held in Atlanta, Georgia in June. The three qualifying students were Shannon Lackey, Sydney Mackrella, and Autumn Meunier.
English II Students Participate in Book Discussion
There was plenty of food, entertainment, and pleasant conversation shared on Thursday, May 24th, as Mrs. Kallis’s sophomore English II CP students gathered to discuss Tuesdays with Morrie alongside other teachers and upperclassmen in the high school courtyard. The afternoon served as an in-depth discussion of Tuesdays with Morrie, an anecdotal novel by Mitch Albom that honors the life of Morrie Schwartz through the sharing of the wisdoms Schwartz passed onto Albom in the final years of Morrie’s life. The students discussed the book in groups governed by teacher and administrator volunteers: Mrs. Bauer, Mr. Kallis, Mr. Kriebel, Mr. Magaro, Mr. Schmaldienst, and Mr. Snyder. Upperclassmen also assisted the teachers in facilitating the group discussions.
The afternoon included lots of tasty food supplied by Mrs. Kallis and her students, as well as entertainment by several students. A select group of boys from all grade levels performed “Hello, Mary Lou” a cappella, and sophomore Coby Conrad performed a cover of a song from the Foo Fighters. The musical performances served to celebrate Morrie’s passion for music and dancing. Randomly drawn prizes arranged by Mrs. Kallis were awarded to lucky students and volunteers.
The event was a huge success and was enjoyed by all. Thank you to all of the teachers and upperclassmen who volunteered their time in the book discussion, and thank you to Mrs. Kallis for her dedication to the event’s success and the success of our students!
