RMS Knightly News
Week of September 12, 2022
Hello RMS Knights and Families
Our September Honor the Castle theme is "Making Meaningful Connections". Making meaningful connections is all about the "Why"...fostering an environment where our Richards Middle School community is being safe, respectful and responsible around the building. Our staff is grateful for the opportunities we have had to connect with our Knights and looking forward to week three of the 22-23 school year.

Hello Richards, Middle School families,
You are cordially invited to attend our Richards Middle School Meet the Teacher Night (MTTN) Open House. MTTN will be from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, September 15th. Our families should enter through our main entrance door (Door #1) on the Garfield side of the building.
Our opening session will be a voluntary informational meeting for our families about "The Facts About Vaping." This presentation will take place from 5:30 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. in our RMS cafeteria. The Meet the Teacher Night Open House format will start at 6:00 p.m. and provide an opportunity for our families to visit their students' classrooms. With our students having six classes and seminar on their schedule, we encourage our families to only spend no more than 7 minutes at each classroom.
Each of our staff members will create a video explaining their curriculum and 2022-2023 school year classroom happenings. We will send a school messenger communication with each of the staff's MTTN videos on Monday (9/12/22) to our families. We encourage our families to view these presentations before our formal Meet the Teacher night on September, 15, 2022.
We are also holding two voluntary Technology FAQ sessions centered around our newly deployed student MacBooks. These presentations will take place 6:30 p.m. to 6:45 p.m and 7:00 p.m. to 7:15 p.m. also in our RMS Cafeteria.
Our staff is looking forward to seeing our families this upcoming Thursday.
Beginning of the Year Benchmark Testing
We will begin administering our beginning of the year assessments this week.
Testing begins Monday and will run through next Friday, September 23rd on designated days for each of the assessments over this testing window. It is important to note that your child's performance on these benchmark assessments could impact their student schedule. Additional information and any change to your student schedule will be communicated in early October.
Students will complete the following assessments:
SRI - Scholastic Reading Inventory during Social Studies class.
FastBridge ELA during ELA class.
FastBridge Math during math class.
Saebers Behavior Screener during Science.
- Students will need to use their student ID in the lunch line. Student's that do not have their ID will be called after all students who have IDs have been called
- If your Knight has lost their ID, they may go to the media center before school, after school or seminar to purchase a new one for $3.
Free and Reduced Lunch
When the 2021-2022 school year ended, so did free meals for every student. While the federal government funded a program that allowed all students access to free meals during the COVID-19 pandemic, Congress has declined to continue funding this program.
- Families should submit a free & reduced application to determine if they qualify for free or reduced priced meals.
- There is a carry over period (30 school days from the first day of school) where students can use their status from the previous school year. This ONLY applies to actual benefits, meaning not all students are free for 30 days to start the year because everyone was free last year.
- Meal prices will remain the same as they were pre-Covid (last time students had to pay).
- Middle School Breakfast $1.65
- Reduced Breakfast $0.30
- Middle School Lunch $2.85
- Reduced Lunch $0.40
- We will be using a monthly Meal Order Form. Parents must complete the Meal Order Form each month in order to receive breakfast or lunch. These should be submitted to the Meal Coordinators prior to the start of the next month.
- Fresh fruit & vegetable bars are back!
- All prepayments should be made ONLINE using the new Family Portal.
Students who qualify for Free or Reduced Lunch should take an entree, fruit/vegetable, and milk.
Please complete the 2022-2023 online application below to find out if your family qualifies for free or reduced-price meals.
Outside Food and Beverage Policy
Outside food delivery is a safety concern. We do not want to have strangers and people that we do not know coming to our buildings with delivery bags. It also is a workload issue for office personnel. Managing multiple food deliveries during lunchtime becomes an additional responsibility for our office staff.
The District works hard to provide a variety of healthy, good-tasting food in its cafeterias, and students are always free to bring their own lunch to school. We will continue to follow our past practice of making sure students receive lunch if they forget to bring one from home.
