Curriculum Corner

Writing

Our first writing unit of study will cover narrative writing. We will discuss character traits and plot this week and I will finish the week by doing some modeled writing with the class. Students will begin drafting their narratives next week.

Reading

This week, we will continue reading The Tiger Rising. While we read, we focus not only on character traits, but looking deeper into characters to understand their feelings and actions.

We will continue working on Unit 1 in Reach for Reading as well. We will continue reviewing the concepts of main idea & details and author's purpose as we read Shaped by Tradition.

Language Arts

Wordly Wise: We will begin Unit 3 this week. 3A & 3B will be due on Thursday. The Unit 3 test will be on Friday, 9/30.

Words Their Way: We will begin splitting into our small groups for spelling this week. Tic-Tac-Toe activities will be due on Friday, which will also be their quiz day.

Grammar: We will also be starting some grammar this week. We will begin with a review of nouns.

Math

This week in math, students will be working on some geometry skills by reviewing points, line segments, lines, rays, angles, triangles, and finding the area and perimeter of rectangles. I've decided to move the test date back to Tuesday, September 27. I will pass out study guides this week and they will be due on Monday, September 26.

Science

We will be switching gears from Indiana History to Science for the next few weeks. We will spend this week studying the scientific method before kicking off our science fair projects next week. These will be done completely in class, although students may need some additional materials from home once they decide on their topics.

Camp Tecumseh

Thank you, thank you, thank you for all of your help with Camp Tecumseh! Whether you chaperoned the trip, made buttons, or made sure your child was packed properly and picked up on time, we could not have done it without you. We had beautiful weather and had a blast!

Jog-A-Thon

Our next big event is Jog-A-Thon, which takes place next week! You can start sending in pledges and money as soon as you have them ready. Each student has a goal of $50. The class that raises the most money gets to cream the principals!

Also, if you are able to help, our class still needs donations of apples & bananas and parents to help the day of the event. You can sign up here:

Scholastic Orders

First of all, thank you to everyone who ordered last month! We received 14 free books for our classroom library. They also sent me a set of coupons for a free book (valued at $5 or less) when you spend $10. They are kind of picky about those coupons and won't let them take $5 off of a book, the book actually has to be $5 or less. Each student got a coupon in his/her mailbox last Friday with this month's order forms.

I will be placing our next order on Friday, 9/30. You can either send in the paper orders or visit https://clubs.scholastic.com/ and enter class code L67HL. There is a wider selection available online and you are able to pay with a credit card if you would like to.
