Conductor Corner

Hi DMS Families,

Durand Middle School is going to be starting a new and exciting challenge for all students. Teachers have some concerns about students skipping the instructional videos and going right into doing their daily online work. Although the instructional videos are not usually worth a grade, this is where the teaching takes place and where specific assignment help and instruction is addressed. Teachers know students who watch the videos are achieving at higher rates than those who are not. We are specifically wanting our online students to engage in this challenge, but all students are welcome to participate. Please encourage your child to participate in this fun weekly challenge!

In order to have a chance to win a weekly prize, students will watch their core content teacher's videos Monday-Thursday. Each content area (math, science, social studies, and science) will be giving students a secret code word during the video. By Thursday, students will have a four word secret code message from each of their core teachers. The video on Thursday will contain a link for students to fill out the form with the secret code message for each core class. Students who fill out a form with the correct sentence on Thursday will have a chance to win a prize each week. Winners will be announced in the weekly newsletters!!!

To sweeten the deal even a little more, students who fill out every Thursday form for the next three weeks will have the chance to win a $50 Amazon gift card!

The code words will start to appear in your videos this Tuesday. To get students started, I included Monday's code words below.

Have fun learning DMS Railroaders!!!

Second Marking Period Academic Focus: Vocabulary

During the second marking period, our academic focus area is going to be on vocabulary. Teaching students vocabulary increases their achievement, helps them to comprehend what they read and hear, increases their testing performance, and statistically increases their chances of landing a great job in the future. Each week, teachers will be focusing on three content vocabulary words and two common academic language words in every class. Please ask your child about these words and practice using them at home in daily speech.
