Bryn Mawr Bulletin
December 2022 Newsletter
Update from Mrs. Beverly
During the month of November, Bryn Mawr School focused on kindness in honor of World Kindness Day. We read a lot of stories related to kindness and discussed random acts of kindness. We also created a schoolwide bulletin board where every student and staff in our school community took a picture to become the "I" in kind. This powerful display is up in our school as a reminder to our students to be a good friend, treat others with respect, and to help each other when they need a hand. Each person has their own background and is a mini picture in our kindness mosaic. We are so proud of our amazing students and the kind and caring students they all are.
Thank you to our Bryn Mawr families for supporting your students at home. We truly appreciate your home-school collaboration.
Yours in education,
Brooke Beverly
Bryn Mawr Principal

❄️ Kindergarten News ❄️
Please continue to send your child to school with labeled gloves, hats, and warm coats daily. We like to get outside every day, even in the winter! We encourage students to bring snow pants and boots whenever there is snow on the ground! Spending some time at home practicing putting on winter gear and zipping independently is extremely helpful.
In reading we are beginning Unit 4 entitled Around the Neighborhood will focus on the people and places in our community. We will continue to review the letters, sounds and high frequency words we’ve learned and begin to work on the letters/sounds Oo, Dd and our new high frequency words: you, do.
In writing, we continue to build on our sentence writing skills using our high frequency words and letter sounds. Please remember that it is not our expectation to have words spelled correctly. Students should be using the sounds they hear to write words to the best of their ability.
Students have been working hard identifying and adding numbers 1 - 10. Our next unit in math focuses on shapes! Three dimensional shapes are often difficult for kindergarteners to remember and identify. You can help reinforce math skills at home by continuing to practice counting by 1’s and 10’s to 100. Also encourage your student to identify shapes around the house and use shapes to help them draw.
❄️ First Grade News ❄️
First Grade is Fabulous. Our students are working hard and have made such wonderful progress thus far. In reading, students have been learning to read CVC words with automaticity. In the coming weeks, we will begin learning long vowel sounds with silent e and vowel variants. Please continue to read and practice sight words nightly to help your child become an independent reader.
When reading out loud to your child, it is helpful to ask them who, what, where and why questions to develop their comprehension skills.
In math, we will continue to work on addition and subtraction facts to ten. Please practice math facts at home to help develop fluency and mastery.
In science, students are learning about sound and light. Students are participating in engaging activities using our Mystery Science program.
The weather is beginning to get cooler. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately with sweatshirts and jackets so they are not cold. We will be going outside as long as the weather allows.
❄️ Second Grade News ❄️
We are baking some smart “cookies” in Second Grade!
December is going to be a busy month. Our Polar Express activities will be held on the week of December 19th. Second grade students can wear their PJs on Friday, December 23rd.
In reading, we will continue with our theme Animal Discoveries. Students will be working on inflectional endings, long vowel sounds, and prefixes. The children will enjoy some animal poems and write some poetry of their own.
In writing, students will learn to write a how-to paragraph. Their brains are certainly growing in reading and writing.
In math, children will fluently add and subtract within 100 using the strategies based on place value, properties of operation and the relationships of addition and subtraction. Keep up the great work with at home learning and assignments.
We will be going outside for recess so please dress your child so they can enjoy the fresh air and maybe the snow!
Thank you for your continued support.
❄️Technology News ❄️
We are working on Science (STEAM) Units in Technology classes for the next few months. We are using an amazing program called Project Lead the Way and the creativity is flowing! In Kindergarten, the students are learning about Structure and Function and will create a paintbrush that could paint thick lines, skinny lines and dots all at once for their final activity. This will be very challenging but the students will also learn to identify, discuss and fix mistakes and to also realize that mistakes are a part of the learning process.
The First Graders are participating in a unit where they need to design a shoe for someone who is traveling to the desert. They will be doing a lot of research on the desert and desert animals before working collaboratively on a shoe design that will withstand the harsh desert weather as well as be comfortable and light enough to wear on the trip.
The second graders will be working on a project that involves preventing a landslide. They will be studying maps, landforms and the changing Earth to help identify ways to prevent a landslide from ruining a house on the bottom of a hill. Stay tuned for some wonderful learning going on in our school!

❄️Art News ❄️
Hello families!
I hope you are well and have enjoyed what your children have been bringing home from art class. We have been cruising through the elements of art over the last few months and the students have really worked hard. They expanded their knowledge of how lines can become both geometric and organic shapes, and have now transitioned onto color theory.
I have been telling my students to spread joy with their art. This means that they can give the art to someone at home, take a picture of it and send it digitally to someone, or they can even send it via snail mail! (A lot of them got excited about the possibility of using stamps! haha) During the holiday season, there is nothing more special than something that was made from the heart. Please help me to encourage them to spread their artistic talents to those around them near or far.
“And the Grinch, with his Grinch-feet ice cold in the snow, stood puzzling and puzzling, how could it be so? It came without ribbons. It came without tags. It came without packages, boxes or bags. And he puzzled and puzzled 'till his puzzler was sore. Then the Grinch thought of something he hadn't before. What if Christmas, he thought, doesn't come from a store. What if Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more.”
― Dr. Seuss, How the Grinch Stole Christmas!
❄️Physical Education News ❄️
Hi Families!
As the school year is in full swing, we are continuing to learn and practice our locomotor (skipping, galloping, walking, sliding, etc.) and gross motor skills, such as running, throwing, kicking, etc. In addition, we have been playing whole group games that focus on demonstrating good sportsmanship by following the rules, being a good teammate, and a good attitude. We are continually practicing the 3 P’s of PE: practice, patience and perseverance!
Before Thanksgiving, we finished up our fitness unit which entailed learning exercises for different parts of the body by participating in a boot camp style class. Technology was incorporated into this unit for our warm-up through awesome, engaging videos. We worked through an entire chase series moving from the ocean to space! Students were then given the opportunity to use the scooters to work on muscle endurance by playing Pac-Man and other fun games!
From now until Winter Break, we will be doing our basketball unit which will focus on the main elements of dribbling, passing, and shooting. This has been one of the most requested units so I am very excited! Mindfulness will continue to be incorporated and taught throughout the school year. Lastly, sneakers are preferred for safety.
In good health,
Miss. D
