DMS Family Update
March 14, 2023
Happy Pi Day!
As we march forward in the school year and arrive to the conclusion of Term 2 on Friday (3/17), it is important to remember where we began. Our learning community has grown quite a bit to this point in the school year. Our 5th grade students are maturing rapidly and have clearly established an identify as DMS Titans. Our 8th grade students are thinking less and less about their immediate future and are focusing on high school aspirations. Our 6th and 7th graders are progressing to be the leaders in our school next year. This is all evidence of the growth from experiences each has had throughout the year to this point. In the coming days, grade level or team meetings will be held to focus in on this month's Character Trait: Responsibility. As young adolescents mature, we see great growth with responsibility in many areas; as a father, I question the level of that responsibility at times (I am sure I am not alone...). That said, responsibility is best captured by the notion that the real finger-pointing that can be done for accountability is one's own index finger pointing back at oneself in the mirror. We can provide the tools (student agenda, note-taking strategies, graphic organizers for writing, procedural templates for mathematical formula, reminders about lab safety, guided stretching routines for the beginning of a practice, and so on) to each student and over time, those tools should become a part of the students' norms. As we continue forward and see students realizing growth and independence it is important to occasionally check in on the progress with responsibility and if needed put some direct supports in place. Over time, the need to do so is lessened and the use of the tools become automatic...our goal.
