December 2015

From the Principal's Office

Happy Holidays from all of us at Sabetha Elementary School! It is hard to believe that the second quarter is coming to an end. As we approach this midpoint in the school year I have been reflecting on the AWESOME things that have been happening at Sabetha Elementary School this year. The growth we have seen in our students both academically and socially is very rewarding. We know this wouldn't be possible without the continued support from our parents and the community. I would like to take a moment to thank you for making educaiton a priority for your child. We appreciate your continued support!

As many of you know last spring our students in grades 3rd-5th took the new Kansas Assessments aligned to the Kansas College and Career Ready standards. We recently received information about how our students performed on these new tests, which were taken in the spring of 2015. We will be sending individual student reports home with our second quarter report cards for students in grades 4th and 5th. We are extremely pleased looking at the results of Sabetha Elementary School. In every subject area our students performed above the state average. If you have any questions as you look at these new assessment results please don't hestitate to contact us. Additionally, I encourage you to remember that the state assessments are only one indicator of student's learning.

Have a wonderful winter break!

Cold Weather Guidelines - Before School and Recess

We are observing the following guidelines for being outside before school in the morning. If the temperature is above 25 degrees including the windchill we will remain outside in the morning as long the ground isn't snow covered and it isn't raining or snowing. Please dress your child accordingly and consider this when dropping them off early. Students are always welcome to come in and eat breakfast at 7:30.

Starting Monday, December 7th, we will be having Walk and Talk on both playground areas. This will allow students to get some excercise and stay warmer while waiting for school to start. K-2 will be on the east blacktop with grades 3rd-5th on the south playground area. All students will line up on the east blacktop and wait to be picked up by the staff member on duty before beginning walk and talk.

We will use the following guidelines for going outside for recess. We believe recess is an important part of the school day and we promote students having the opportunity to go outside for recess whenever possible. If the temperature is 20 degrees Fahrenheit or above we will have regular outdoor recess. If the temperature is between 11-19 degrees students will have limited/shortened outdoor recess at teacher's discretion. When temperatures reach 10 degrees or below students will have indoor recess.

Supporting Angie's Kids

The staff and students at SES are participating in a fundraiser to help support Angie's Kids. Angie McGuire spent countless hours helping children in the community through the Big Brothers, Big Sisters Program. Her legacy lives on through Angie's Kids. The staff at SES are purchasing "jeans days" for $1.00 a day to support Angie's Kids.

We are asking students to participate by purchasing a "Hat Day." On Friday, December 11th students will be able to wear their favorite hat at school all day for the low price of $1.00. The money raised will be collected and given to Angie's Kids to purchase gifts for children in our community. Thanks in advance for helping this worthwhile cause.

Nurses Notes

Winter is here! The crisp morning air is rejuvinating as we come to school each morning.

Please remember to send your little ones with proper coats, caps, and gloves for the changing outside temperatures. Even a short wait or a short walk before school can be uncomfortable without the extra layers of clothing.

Please send your children to school with their water bottles full of water each day. I continue to push fluids when I see children who are under the weather with general complaints such as a cough and runny nose. If your child is running an elevated temperature, please keep them at home and encourage fluids and rest. They may return to school after being fever-free for 24 hours.

In October we offered CPR/AED training to all staff in the school district. A big thank you to Anna Dietrich for providing the training for us. I am proud to say we have 22 additional staff certified and all five buildings were represented. Here at Sabetha Elementary, we have nine additional staff that are now certified in CPR.

Wishing you good health and happy holidays!

Word of the Month

The word of the month for December is CHOICES. Our students make choices every day that impact their success both socially and academically. We encourage students to make good choices and try to help them understand the consequences of the choices they make.

Teachers' Wish List - PTO News

The PTO & the SES teachers and support staff are teaming up to create a Christmas Wish List for the teachers in your lives. If you typically give the teachers in your child’s life a gift, please consider giving them a gift they can and will use in their classroom. Here’s how the program will work….In the main hallway, you will see a “forest of trees.” Each tree will have paper ornaments taped onto it that will have a gift idea for a teacher. Examples of items that will be on the trees (but each teacher’s list will be individualized to that specific teacher) are sharpie marker set, board game, bag of candy, post it notes, etc. There will also be trees with gift ideas for supporting teachers and staff (P.E., Art, Music, etc.)

Your role as a parent: When picking up your child from school, you can come into the school and select a desired ornament or ornaments off the trees of the teachers and support staff you would like to gift. You can then purchase the item on the ornament and gift the item(s) at Christmas. Thank you for supporting our teachers and staff at SES!
