TO GIVE IS TO RECEIVE
Generosity is an attitude of freely sharing our ideas and talents and giving our time generously. We show generosity by being welcoming, inclusive and promoting a sense of belonging.
Prayer for Mothers
Loving God,
As a mother gives life and nourishment to her children,
so you watch over your Church.
Bless these women,
that they may be strengthened as Christian mothers.
Let the example of their faith and love shine forth.
Grant that we, their sons and daughters,
may honour them always
with a spirit of profound respect.
Grant this through Christ our Lord.
Amen
Dear Parents and Carers
This weekend is Mother’s Day. We have many mothers, grandmothers and mother figures in our school who give their absolute best for the benefit of our children. We thank you for what you do and celebrate having such loving, generous, caring, gentle, selfless people in our lives. We would like to wish all mothers, grandmothers and mother figures a very happy Mother’s Day this weekend and hope you will spend a great day being spoiled by your families.
Thank-you to the P and F for organising and hosting the Mother’s Day stall to give our students an opportunity to choose a gift for their mums. This takes considerable time and we thank the volunteers for generously giving of their own time to acknowledge our mums and providing an opportunity for our students to live our motto; 'To give is to receive'.
This week I had the pleasure of attending the Kindy Mother’s Day events. The joy on the faces of the mums as they watched their children sing and share their thoughts about their mums was delightful.
The P and F Mother’s Day Tea this morning was a huge success. Mothers, grandmothers and mother figures all enjoyed lovely food, great coffee and the ever-popular photo booth. Many thanks to the volunteers on the committee and the P and F Exec for their hours of organisation and the Dads who volunteered on the day to spoil our Mums.
Please join us on Saturday evening at 6.30pm, at the parish, for our Junior Community Mass that will be dedicated to Mothers. May is also the month of Mary and it would be an ideal opportunity for families to share the Hail Mary together on a regular basis. During this Mass, Father Thai will bless the rosary beads for our class prayer tables.
Next week, students in Years 3 and 5 will be involved in NAPLAN testing. This is a national test to track the progress of Year 3 and 5 students for the country, the state, systems and for schools. Some students become anxious around these tests by the attention placed on them by the media. These are a snapshot of how your child has performed on a particular day and shouldn’t cause any stress for your child or family. It is important that routines are maintained as per a regular school week and that children, as expected each week, attend, are well rested, well fed and happy to come to school. We utilise these tests for school planning and monitoring along with many other sources of data and your child just needs to know that they need to try their best.
World Asthma Day was on Wednesday, an initiate by Asthma WA to raise awareness and support those impacted by asthma. At Orana we have access to asthma first aid kits and training. If your child is diagnosed with asthma, please send a current Asthma Plan prepared by your doctor to the school so the management of their condition can be supported and consistent. More information is available on www.asthmawa.org.au
In the afternoons, students are supervised at the back gate or the green shed until 3.30pm. Students are then escorted to administration by the duty teachers. If on occasion, parents and carers are running late, please park your car and collect your child from the office. The carpark outside the administration building is not to be used for drive through pick up or drop off. This is not safe and it causes traffic congestion. Thank-you for prioritising the safety of our students.
The Term 2 planner can be found on our website.

Faith In Action
Junior Community Mass Saturday, 8th May 6.30pm
Our first Junior Community Mass takes place this Saturday at 6.30pm at our parish, Saints John and Paul Church, Pinetree Gully Road, Willetton. Our church can celebrate Mass at 100% capacity on this date. Children from K-3 are particularly invited to celebrate with the Orana community and we will announce our first Junior Faith in Action Award. Our junior students will be reading and singing in the choir. Come join us as we celebrate Mary, our Mother and our own Mums.
History of the Devotion to Mary in the month of May
For centuries, the Catholic Church has set aside the entire month of Mary to honour Mary, Mother of God. Not just a day in May, but the entire month.
It is common for parishes to recite the Rosary on a daily basis during May, and many erect a special May altar with a statue or picture of Mary as a reminder of Mary’s month. Additionally, it is a long-standing tradition to crown the statue of Mary during May – a custom known as May Crowning. Often, the crown is made of beautiful blossoms representing Mary’s beauty and virtue. It is also a reminder to the faithful to strive to imitate our Blessed Mother’s virtue in our own lives. May Crowning, in some areas, is a huge celebration and is usually done outside of Mass, although Mass may be celebrated before or after the actual crowning.
The Rosary
The Rosary is one of the most cherished prayers of our Catholic Church. Introduced by the Creed, the Our Father, three Hail Mary’s and the Glory Be, and concluding with the Save Regina, the Rosary involves the reciting of five decades consisting of the Our Father, 10 Hail Mary’s and the Glory Be. While reciting the decades, the individual meditates on the saving mysteries of Our Lord’s life and Mary’s devotion to her beloved Son. As we journey through the Joyful, Sorrowful, Glorious and the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary, the individual brings to mind the Lord’s incarnation, His passion, death and His resurrection from the dead. In this way, the Rosary assists us to grow in deeper appreciation of these mysteries and helps us to live our lives closer to God.
First Communion Preparation – Commitment Mass 15/16 May
Year Four students together with their families are invited to a Commitment Mass, in preparation for their First Communion on the weekend of 15/16 May at either Saturday 6.30pm or Sunday 10.30am. After Mass, parents/carers are asked to go to the hall to nominate which Mass time they would prefer for the sacrament day.

Social Justice Group Plant Sale
At the end of this term, the Social Justice team will be holding a plant sale to raise money to buy food that the teachers will then cook and serve to the homeless in our community. If you have any plastic plant pots or milk cartons that you can donate for us to put plants in, it would be greatly appreciated. We would also be grateful for any plant cuttings. If you are able to help us, pots and plants can be dropped off at the year 4W classroom. The Social Justice group will take care of the plants until the plant sale. We will inform you of the specific date in the near future.

Talking About School
Talking with your child about the school day shows you’re interested in what’s going on in his life. This interest boosts his mental health, happiness and wellbeing. It can also have a very positive effect on your child’s behaviour and achievement. It shows your child that you value school and education, which encourages him to value it too.
