Principal's Message
Dear Memorial Families,
This past Wednesday, we had a school-wide morning meeting where we focused on our core value of "honesty." Mrs. Carlson reached out to the Manchester Police Department and invited them to come to our meeting. Our new police chief, Ed Conley, accepted our offer and joined us along with two of his officers. Chief Conley and the officers talked to the children about the importance of honesty in both the school and in their work as police officers. He told the children that he was new to MBTS and wanted the children to introduce themselves to him if they saw him around town.
Chief Conley sent me a really nice email this morning that I want to share with you.
John-
I had to tell you that this morning as I exited Essen with my coffee, a young girl yelled “excuse me, excuse me.” I turned around and she said, “Hi, I’m from the Memorial School." I couldn’t believe it, she was actually doing what I asked the kids to do. It was awesome and made my Friday. Her name is *****, and I was so taken back that I forgot to ask what grade she is in. I would guess that she is in 3rd or 4th grade.
I just wanted to share that and thank you for inviting us over.
Character education is something that is very important to us at MMES. It is great to have such a strong partnership with the amazing role models on our police force. Welcome to Manchester, Chief Conley!
This MONDAY is the last day to put your name in the hat for our 2 open School Council parent representative positions. We could really use your help as we chart the course for MMES over the next couple of years. A topic of interest that we will work on will be the potential new school building project. We are looking for creative, positive, collaborative parents to join us on the council. Meetings are once a month on Wednesdays at 3:15-4:15 PM. Email Lori (lorijfonseca@gmail.com) or Alli (allidandrea@hotmail.com) if you are interested. Monday is the deadline for candidate submission!
Enjoy the weekend!

From MMPTO Enrichment...
On Thursday, the school welcomed Jim Clark of Wingmasters, a local wild bird rescue organization. His educational presentation was an engaging, lively discussion involving live birds and a wide range of topics related to their habitat, feeding, nesting and hunting behaviors. The Enrichment committees has provided questions to ask your child so that you may better understand what the children learned, and so that this wonderful knowledge might be retained. The presenter commented on Manchester’s wonderfully polite and well behaved student body, for the second year in a row.
Questions:
*How many birds of prey are there? (five)
*Which birds are birds of prey? (Osprey, Hawk, Owl, Eagle and Falcon)
*What qualifies as a bird of prey? There are four qualities:
1. Talons (sharp claws)
2. Curved upper beak
3. Binocular vision
4. Flying technique (diving)
*What is the fastest animal in the world? (Peregrine Falcon)
*Which Falcon is local to MBTS? (Kestrel)
*Why is it advantageous for female birds to be brown and gray? (to protect the young from predators)
*Why do the males need to be colorful? (to mark territory for nesting and to effectively stand out against other males)
*Why do falcons need to fly so fast? (because they hunt pigeons who are also fast)
*How fast does a Peregrine falcon dive? (up to 200 MPH)
*Why do Native Americans believe that carrying a part of an animal is a good thing? (the spirit of that animal protects them)
*What is a Navajo cradle board? (it served as a baby carrier and cradle)
*Were babies placed in their cradle boards on the ground or on the wall? (wall)
*Why? (for warmth as the ground is too cold)
*Why is the biggest “mousetrap” right outside the school? (it’s the dumpster!)

MMES Zen Garden
To further our connection with our sister school in Japan, Mrs. Decker, some students, and a handful of volunteers built a beautiful Zen garden near the vegetable gardens. It came out amazing! Thank you to Mrs. Decker and the MMPTO for helping to make this little corner of our school a peaceful retreat for all!

Manchester Bike & Pedestrian Safety Committee
Halloween is coming soon!
From www.safekids.org
As you plan for a fun night of trick or treating for your children please consider safety first!
- Decorate costumes and bags with reflective tape or stickers and, if possible, choose light colors.
- Choose face paint and makeup whenever possible instead of masks, which can obstruct a child’s vision.
- Have kids carry glow sticks or flashlights to help them see and be seen by drivers.
- When selecting a costume, make sure it is the right size to prevent trips and falls.
