A Legacy of Trust

Adrienne & Jeremy Penner - serving with MB Mission

Psalms 20:7

Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.

Many years ago, before I (Jeremy) or my father were born, my Grandpa became a missionary. He felt that the Lord was calling him to serve as a doctor in Africa, so he enrolled in medical school. He followed this call through a failed first year, biking to and from school every day (even in winter!), and often living on nothing but oatmeal and faith! His trust in the Lord finally led him to Eritrea, in eastern Africa, where he learned 3 Arabic dialects and served faithfully for nearly a decade. Though failed health brought him home earlier than he wanted, the seeds of trust and missionary service were already sown into my family. 5 of his children later served overseas, with my father returning to Africa, this time in Cameroon, for 3 years while I was a toddler.

This past August, Dr. Lorne Penner, passed away following a stroke. Throughout his life he not only delivered over 1,000 babies, but also brought the gospel to many, and joy and laughter to all. One of the greatest things left behind by my Grandpa was his legacy of trust - a trust so powerful that it has affected every member of his family, down to the 3rd generation. I find it amazing that the seeds my grandpa planted in his own life, and in the lives of his children have so radically changed who we are as a family. I feel as though the call that God has on our lives is a continuation of the call that was first placed on my grandpa's shoulders all those years ago; he carried that call through his entire life, never turning to the right or the left. His trust in God was absolute, and I pray that someday I might be able to look back at a life lived in service to God with half so much vigour, enthusiasm, and joy! One thing I do know, is that when he arrived at the gates of heaven and stepped into the presence of Christ, he did it while singing, and that Jesus greeted him like an old friend. This legacy of trust has been passed down to me!

We don't know what the future holds - possibly danger, busyness, triumphs and pain... but we do know that through it all Christ is our rock and our fortress. He has been faithful this far, and He will be faithful through all the years of our life, until our time is done and we pass this legacy on to our children and grandchildren.

It's amazing to think that the God of the universe, the one who created the heavens, is the one who is calling us onto the mission field! He is the one who has prepared us, encourages us along the way, and will sustain us as we go! And the incredible thing is that this same God has a call on every one of us! Christ has called us as his bride to be the church - to rise up in our world and be His hands and feet! We may be obeying that call on the other side of the world, but it is quite possible that your call is in your own backyard! Trust God that He has prepared you for it, and that He walks with you! Ask Him today what service, big or small, you can do. After all, He is worthy of our love, our faith, and our trust.

What's Next?

Now that we're settled back in Manitoba, we've begun fundraising in earnest! Thank you so much to all the people who have already invited us into your homes and small groups and given us a chance to share the vision God has placed on our hearts! It has been our absolute pleasure to get to know all of you a bit better! At times, support raising can be a daunting task, especially with the ever-decreasing Canadian dollar taking it's toll on our support percentage. However, God owns the cattle on a thousand hills, and in the words of a good friend, 'He never seems unable to sell a few for those who need it'.

As we are trusting God with our fundraising, we invite you to get the word out! Amazing things happen from random conversations, and so if you know of anyone who would love to get our newsletter, or a prayer card, or a visit from us, let us know! God can do more than we could ever ask or imagine, and we are trusting Him to do just that!

What's Happening in Thailand and Burma?

The more we share about what God is doing in Thailand and Myanmar, the more we can hardly wait to be back there! The Holy Spirit is moving POWERFULLY in people's hearts and lives!!! Just recently around 700 people accepted Christ at a 2 day outreach! The churches are outgrowing their buildings, which is a pretty great problem to be having! We ask for your continued prayers for strength and encouragement for all the national workers who are serving fearlessly in the face of oppression to reach the lost with the good news of grace and freedom!

Our hearts are full of stories transformation, and unfortunately we can't share them all here, so fire us an email, a text, a phone call, or grab us for coffee because this stuff is just too good to not share! And we'd love to hear how God is at work in your lives! How have you seen the transforming power of the gospel at work in the last couple months?

Prayer requests!

  • Pray for the Burmese churches in Thailand and Myanmar!
  • Pray for the Burmese leaders and interns as they continue to share the gospel.
  • Pray for us as we serve in the Steinbach MB church!
  • Pray that we would be filled with the Holy Spirit and continue to trust in God!
  • Pray that God would continue to supply prayer partners and monthly financial support
  • Pray for the economy of Canada!
