Mrs. Solis' 3rd Grade Class

February 1 - 5, 2016

What we are learning next week:

Reading: The students will be learning to write summaries for cause and effect structured nonfiction. We will be looking at the specific vocabulary that signals a cause and effect and use graphic organizers to organize their thinking.

Writing: We are learning strategies on how to research. We will learn what plagiarism is, how to take notes while researching, and how to put information into our own words.

Math: Our next unit will explore the x9 multiplication strategies and we’ll spend time working on division problems. When working on division, the focus will be on connecting the multiplication strategy to the related division fact. Our DCA 10 & 11 test will be on Tuesday, Feb. 9th.

Social Studies: We are starting our unit learning about different cultures in the community. We will start by researching our own heritage, and compare/contrast that with other cultures in the community.

Science: We are starting a new unit on weather and the water cycle. Students will explore with different weather tools as well track the weather from Round Rock and one other city. Ask them what is a thermometer, wind vane, and rain gauge.

Play fractions games on Google Classroom.

Students need to read 20 minutes per night.

Valentine's Day Party

This year each third grade classroom will be holding an intimate and low-key breakfast to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Each class will have a sign-up for foods needed at their Valentine’s Breakfast. Please be on the look out for an email from our homeroom parent, Katherine Chong.

Each child will need valentines for everyone in the classroom and a decorated box to hold his/her cards. I will send home a class list so that you can prepare valentines. We currently have 22 students in our classroom.

Since all parties across the school are being held on the same day, we ask that parents send in items with students but not attend the party this time. We will have a GIANT end of year celebration so we are asking that you rest up and begin stretching for that event!! Thank you in advance for your cooperation and help in making this party day fun but low-key.
