OUSD STRIKE INFORMATION
Dear Redwood Heights Families,
As you are all aware, the teacher union (OEA) is planning a strike within the next 10 days. We are taking steps to ensure that Redwood Heights (RHS) will remain open should the teachers strike. Buses will maintain normal schedules and meals will be served in the cafeteria. While nothing can 100% replace the highly effective instruction delivered by our incredible teachers, we are preparing a plan that focuses on giving our students an opportunity to help build the school community that we all value. Please take a moment to explain the strike situation to your child or children. Help them understand that school is and will be a safe place for learning during this time. We ask for your cooperation and patience. More information about our plans will be coming soon. Please call our school office @ 510-531-6644 if you have more questions or concerns.
Where Can I Find More Information:
The district website will be regularly updated to keep the community informed as the strike evolves, so check it daily. For more information please go the the OUSD public website's, Labor & Employee Relations section: www.ousd.org/oea.
I know these are challenging times for our entire school and district community. Let's remember that one's decision to strike or not, to cross a picket line or not, is personal and should be respected as such. It is necessary that we respect each other and strive to understand each other better. Thank you for your patience and support as we make certain we are prepared.
Best,
Cynthia
Switching from a ROBOCALL to a TEXT
We are excited to announce RHS will no longer send prerecorded school messages. We will begin using a new messaging application, TALKINGPOINTS, on Monday, February 11, 2019. It is designed to engage all families through translated text messages.
The main benefits are:
- Two-way translation/two way messaging. For example, someone can send us a text in Spanish and we will receive the text in English and vice -versa.
- Quick alert texts that you can read at your convenience.
- The ability for teachers to communicate to ALL parents
Below is the text message you will receive on Monday evening:
Hello, this is a message from Redwood Heights. To receive updates about your student, please download the app: https://goo.gl/D89aov You can also reply here or text 'goodbye' to unsubscribe. Thank you!If you would like to download the TALKINGPOINTS APP, the directions for downloading are attached to this message.

A message from our Garden Educator, Ms. Royalty...
Hi Families!
I have gotten many requests for the recipes used in the garden program - thought it might make sense to share them here. Also, thank you so much for the generous donations! We had another pesto fest this week with our arugula harvest and it wouldn't have happened without all the delicious pasta and olive oil donated. (We're still accepting pantry goods - particularly healthy oils and kid-friendly seasonings).
Anyhow - here are some rough recipes.....
Pesto (puree the following ingredients in a food processor)
greens (we've done basil and arugula(30%)/spinach(70%)
green onions
garlic
parmesan cheese
lemon
olive oil
*****I served this as a spread over soft french bread, or mixed in with pasta @ room temp
Slushies (I blended this in a vitamix which totally blends in all the seed hulls and pith of
pomegranate seeds... texture seems to be the key)
fresh squeezed lemon juice
(some bonus red juice - I used pomegranate, but cranberry would work too)
ice
simple syrup or honey to taste
The Green Monster Pizza was courtesy of Arizmendi Bakery (on Lakeshore)
(we gave them toppings - they donated the pizza)
purple potatoes
arugula
green onions
brocoli
basil
Orange Cleaner (not a food, but cool)
place orange/citrus peels (no fruit, just peel) in a jar and cover with distilled white vinegar. Let sit for approximately 2 weeks and the natural oils/vinegar combo creates an awesome (and kid-friendly) all purpose cleanser. https://www.bonappetit.com/story/diy-kitchen-cleaner
***** must dilute to use.
Thanks for being such a great school. You're the best.
