EMS S2 Week 11 Announcements
The Know-whats and the Know-hows at Estacada Middle School
ELA Smarter Balanced Assessments Begin on Monday (4/16)
This week students will be participating in the statewide English, Language Arts Smarter Balanced Assessment. This assessment has two main components: 1) the CAT - Computer Adaptive Test - and 2) the PT - Performance Task. Students will be measured on their ability to read both literary and informational texts, to write (with organization/purpose, with appropriate conventions, and with evidence to elaborate), to listen, and to complete research. We are looking forward to our students' results. I have embedded a link to the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium website, here. And, there is a helpful video to view below.
Please ask your student how they are achieving and work alongside your student to reduce potential test anxiety and stress. We believe in your student and are here to support their social-emotional needs during these test-taking paradigms.

Progress Reports
Please put yourself into contact with me (hargraveb@estacada.k12.or.us) or our administrative assistants (emsinfo@estacada.k12.or.us) if you have not received your student's progress reports. We will be sending these out every two weeks for the remainder of the year. It is important to be transparent with you about your student's progress in school and how your student is achieving. If your student has an "M" indicator next to an Essential Learning Standard, please speak with your student about completing or retaking the assessment. You should also be in communication with your student's teachers if your student has earned a 1 or a 2 in any Essential Learning Standard. Go Tigers!
Respect Survey Results
Last month in our Advisory classes, students were asked to take a survey about respect. The results have been consolidated. Please take a look at these results (also attached below) and have a discussion with your student about how they show respect and how they are respected by others. We are on our way to creating a safe and kind school.
8th Grade Archery Unit
Students are safe and ready to shoot the arrows at the target. Thank you to Mr. Grochowsky for this awesome experience and safe learning!
8th Grade Focus
Students took a safety course, then participated in a unit to learn how to shoot arrows with a bow. Lifelong sports are important to us at EMS!
8th Grade Student Proud of Accuracy
This student is happy with his results in hitting the target. Throughout the week students improved their accuracy and precision to hit the bull's eye. What steady hands!
Retrieving Arrows
Students check their accuracy and practice safety while removing their arrows from the targets.
Serious Attention
8th grade students are laser-focused, ready to release the arrow to the targets.
8th Grade Fun
This 8th grade unit is fun for our students to explore different options in life-long, individual sports.
Perfection!
This student hits all of his arrows in the center. Way to go!
Listening for the Whistle
8th Graders are trained to listen to the whistle before shooting their arrow. Go Tigers!
Perfection
This student hits all of her arrows in the center. Way to go!
8th Grade Panoramic Photo
On Thursday, April 19, all 8th grade students will be taking a panoramic photo. This EMS tradition has been in place for over a decade. If you wish to purchase this picture, please click here for website link. And: Click here for hard copies to bring into the office. If you have not seen the past pictures, please stop by the EMS library and take a look at the previous 8th grade classes now at EHS. Go Tigers! Go Rangers!
Pennies for Patients
Last Thursday, Sara, from the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, presented information to our students about her Society and our new fundraiser Pennies for Patients. We will be starting Pennies for Patients on Monday, April 16th and it will end on April 27th. When you find loose change or if you have any pennies you would like to donate, please give them to your student. We will be collecting these in our Advisory classes. Our school goal is to raise $500. Click here and here to watch two interesting videos about how local doctors and organizations are making a difference in our community. Go Tigers!
Ellen Whyte's Performance
Social studies classes perform songs based on Essential Learnings about African culture. Each class studied a separate theme then compared it to contemporary life.
An Interdisciplinary Approach
Students in Science classes studied the African food web in a variety of different biomes. Students performed interpretations of the food web and it's delicate balance.
A Reaction to Elephant Poaching
Students watched short documentaries and did research about how poaching is impacting both the elephant population and the local economy.
A Non-traditional Classroom
Students are asked to create through a collaborative process to show proficiency of the Social Studies Essential Learning Standard. This is a different, and meaningful, way to measure student knowledge rather than paper-pencil assessment.
Challenging Students
This process - working with Ellen Whyte during her residency - challenged students' confidence, collaborative and teamwork skills, mental models, and creativity. We are happy to provide students with this alternative way of learning.
Multiple Intelligences
Howard Gardner, a school psychologist and researcher, claims students have eight intelligences. All intelligences together help to build a well-rounded student. The Ellen Whyte residency strengthened our students' multiple intelligences. Go Tigers!
